I've got a Netgear wireless modem and router upstairs which I've been using with my laptop for just over 12 months without any problems. However, over the past 2 days it hasn't been staying connected. My laptop keeps losing the connection, once it gets connected it will randomly disconnect anywhere between 30 seconds and 30 minutes later. To get it reconnected, I right click the little computer with a signal coming out of the screen and click repair, and this sorts it out but again disconnects after a short time. Its getting really annoying now, I've tryed switching the router itself off and on again but that hasn't done anything.

What do I need to do? I don't really fancy setting up the whole network again but if needed I will And I don't know if its a problem with my router or the actual laptop...

You may be getting interferance from another source - try switching to channel 1 or 6 (defaault is 11). Also ensure the router is not sitting on/close to any large metallic surfaces.

How do I change the channel? I'm assuming I'll need to dig the settings etc out...

Interference shouldn't be a problem - the router hasn't moved and nothing large has been moved away from or towards it recently

If your neighbours have got a wireless connection on the same channel that can cause a problem.

Have they just got wireless in ?

Theres nothing really I can think of right now.

Oh is it the Computer > Router connection dropping? Are you sure its defo not the ADSL connection? Does the router automatically download new firmware? has it recently? if it has, that could be a problem, if it hasn't that could also help to download new firmware.

The wireless and internet lights on the router haven't gone off or changed, so I assume its a problem getting the signal to my laptop. I just checked and I'm picking up between 3 and 5 other networks depending on where I am, and it used to be just 2 others, so it may well be interference from neighbours networks.

If I go into the settings on my router and change the channel do I have to change the settings on my laptop as well or will they just 'adapt'?

ETA: Got into router, its already sending the signal out on channel 6 but I can't access the dropdown menu to change it, not sure why...

www.netstumbler.com/downloads/

Download and run that. Then find out which of 1/6/11 is free and use it. Do you have cordless phones?

Done. Two networks on channel 6 (one being me) and 3 on channel 11. The other on channel 6 is a BT Homehub, which is relatively new (think its next door).

Now just to change to channel 1 - when I go into setup -> wireless settings the channel drop down menu is grey and I can't change it. How do I change it? Do I need to switch off the wireless or something and connect my laptop with an RJ45 (?) cable?

And yes we do have wireless phones but again they haven't caused a problem for the past 12 months so I don't think its them

I've moved the router into a different room to see if it still disconnects etc, until I can work out how to change the channel...

Browse for wireless networks using the Netgear utility and it'll show you which channels the others are using. Ideally you'll want a channel seperation of 3 from the strongest signal. It's almost certain a neighbour has recently installed a new wireless network.

To change it go to the IP address of your wireless router in a browser and log in. The third section down, wireless settings contains the settings for which channel to use. I would start with 8 and see how it goes if you can't ascertain which channels your neighbours are using.

I think 108mbs does some funny dual channel malarky....try 54 and see if that changes it. If you want speed, then use a cable hehe

I assume you're referring to the box below the channel number. That doesn't have 54 as an option, it has:
-g & b
-g only
-b only
-Auto 108Mbps
-108Mbps only

confused Why can't things just be simple...?

G only I'd think ... not sure what b&g would do on the router side
... come to think of it I gguess the router can negotiate with the wireless cards

Mine is set to g&b, I have been having similar problems as you. Mine was set to 108 although I have been altering it to try and solve these problems.
I have now changed to channel 2 from 6 (neighbour is on 6 as well) and my laptop automatically changed to match.
Will see how it works.

With the router moved, I get disconnected every half hour or so, so not as frequent but still very annoying.

so everyone is as clueless as me as to why I can't change the channel? Tried plugging the wire in from the router but it doesn't register as a connection, don't know why banghead

I would suggest that it wont let you change the channel wirelessly as that would drop the signal.

Have you tried it via a wired connection?
