Hi,

We are currently with NTL cable in Hampshire and we are looking to change broadband suppliers.
Our phone line is also NTL so this will in turn be changed to BT and we will go down the ADSL route.

Soooo..... I need your help to find a new ISP.

1: Who are you with?

2: What service are you on and the price of this?

3: How do you rate them/ would you recommend them?

4: Plus and Minus points you have encountered?

1: Who are you with?
A&A http://sod.ms

2: What service are you on and the price of this?
5GB/month download in metered hours (8am-6pm weekdays), "fair use policy" outside (64GB one month did not trigger any problems with the fair use policy). 8Mb/s throughput. Thirty five pounds / month plus VAT.

3: How do you rate them/ would you recommend them?
Superb / Yes.

4: Plus and Minus points you have encountered?
Plus: I have a /28 because I asked for one. I have full control of forward and reverse DNS, can run servers on any of my IPs on any port, nothing is blocked or proxied. Their technical people are all technical, ie understand the internet and don't read from a script if you have problems.
Minus: Nothing! Some people might consider it dear I suppose.

1: Who are you with? NTL (Hampshire)

2: What service are you on and the price of this? Unknown. The inlaws pay for it, I piggy back.

3: How do you rate them/ would you recommend them? Shower of scensoredt. Yeah it works, it's speedy (sometimes) but the STB's fall over at random.

4: Plus and Minus points you have encountered?
+ It's a semi-reliable pipe.
+ We've yet to have a bitching letting about P2P activity despite my best efforts.
- P2P appears throttled on common ports.
- Spam protection is none existent.
- Connection falls over when it rains due to broken cable 'somewhere'.
- Transparent proxy makes things like rapidshare / megaupload unavailable.
- Large number of virus carrier machines on the network.

1: Who are you with?
BT

2: What service are you on and the price of this?
£17pcm ofr 8MB

3: How do you rate them/ would you recommend them?
Very good. Line activated on time. Phoned after 18 months, said they weren't competitive, so they gave me their top package, knocked £5 month off, gave me the HomeHub, HubPhone and 250 BT openzone minutes a month. Yes, I would recommend them.

4: Plus and Minus points you have encountered?

PLUS:
ALWAYS get 8MB... never dropped below 7.5MB..! eek
Hubphone is useful for IP calls - free to landlines after 6pm
Secure and updates automatically
Decent wireless coverage
Plug and Play (literally!)

MINUS:
A bit too simple for techie's irked
Online support is toss
HomeHub limited to two ethernet ports
Cannot hide SSID

I'm with BT as well. The line was activated in the early morning on the day they promised it would be, they've been upfront about the fact that I can only get 6MB here. Great uptime, too! Very rarely a problem with them.

So is their telephone support, actually. I upgraded to a small business account from a domestic one, but I still get all the communications relating to a domestic account. And whenever I phone up business support, they can't find my details because I'm registered as a domestic account. Yet if I call the domestic support people, they can't find my details because I'm registered as a business account.

But we always get there in the end. rolleyes

I'd still recommend them, though. You don't need to talk to their people very often.

Actually, the downtime thing is a good point. In three years I've never been bumped off or lost connection (my router dying is the exception! hehe but that isn't BT's fault).

I tried the online support to diagnose a simple fault and they sent me on a wild goose chase. In fact, using the laptop I worked out the issue and fed it back... although clearly using the command prompt is beyond tech support these days... rolleyes

1. NTL

2. Basic telly plus phone plus 10mbps broadband, about 60 quid all up.

3. Very good as long as you don't have to ring them up.

4.
+ Genuine actual 10mbit data service
+ Telly on demand, PPV films and stuff
+ Free calls to other NTL phone users, specifically Mrs Jameson's mother
- Customer service if something goes wrong
+ It never goes wrong
+ It's not ADSL, so you actually get the data rate you paid for - none of this "up to X mbps" nonsense
- Puny 512mbps upload
+ No download cap at all
+ Don't have to deal with BT
- Webspace is a bit bare bones (i.e. here's 55MB, knock yourself out)
+ AUP is actually sane (can run a server, can run a business, home networking isn't against TOS, if you run a server and it's got naughty things on it you're responsible, etc)

I'm with Freeola. Went with them as they offer 3month contract length, so if it was crap I could quickly cancel without waiting a year or more.

I (well... company) pays about £20 a month, but they do lots of different packages.

What sealed the deal for me was ringing their support line and getting through to a UK based guy within 3 rings who knew what he was talking about.

Connection has been pretty solid. Might need to reboot the router every couple of weeks if it drops but has always come back straightaway.

My biz partner uses them too at home and has had no complaints afaik.

1) F2S (Freedom 2 Surf)

2) 8Mb £34.07 per month (but I have a range of 32 static IPs included in this price)

3) I haven't had many problems when using them (once the line had issues due to a duff card at the exchange) this was sorted out quickly. other than that it's been golden

4) Minus, more expensive than other providers, have been taken over by Pipex (I think) so now have a fair use policy which will affect people downloading loads.
Plus, UK support who are knowledgeable, friendly and are reasonably quick at responding to issues (you can't expect the same level of service from an ADSL provider and a Leased Line!!)
