...my computer just said my name!!!

There I was reading an email when suddenly from the speakers I hear the word "Stephen" - it frightened the life out of me. Is there some sort of virus or joke software that's on my PC or am I actually going genuinely proper nuts?

could be that you hit a wrong key combination and enabled the Microsoft text-to-speech synthesiser, could be that, could be someone embedded some HTML in the email to call a wav / sound from a website..

or, most likely it's your sub conscious telling you to take some personal time

If your name was Robert or Paul or anything other than Steven, then I'd say proper nuts, otherwise maybe someone's playing a prank on you.

You weren't surfing for porn were you?

It's rumoured (from reliable sources) that some ISPs have a team of folks who monitor live traffic - and if hardcore porn is detected then they start saying stuff like "Hey you, xxx, from xxxx - stop downloading porn - we're watching you" with the intent of basically freaking you out, and put you off downloading any more!

I had a similar thing a while back but rather than saying a name, my computer would meow at me. Drove me nuts - thought a cat had got trapped somewhere and I hunted high and low for it.

Turned out you can set certain noises to trigger on contacts' PCs when you sign in to MSN and it was a friend of mine logging on rolleyes

I'm afraid. I'm afraid, Dave. Dave, my mind is going. I can feel it. I can feel it. My mind is going. There is no question about it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I'm a... fraid. Good afternoon, gentlemen. I am a HAL 9000 computer. I became operational at the H.A.L. plant in Urbana, Illinois on the 12th of January 1992. My instructor was Mr. Langley, and he taught me to sing a song. If you'd like to hear it I can sing it for you.
