Gmail's a bit slow for me at the moment. If you're not sorted soonish I'll send you an invite when it's finally loaded here...

Erm, can I use my gmail account to access another email account via POP?

If not, what can I use to do this? The more obscure the method, the better, for reasons you can probably guess.

telnet pop.server 110

user <your usersname>
pass <your password>
list (gives you a list of numbers, the first being message number, the second size)
retr ## (where ## corresponds to the message number found above)

If there are very many messages, use "top ##" instead of retr so that you can see the first few lines of the message and if it's what you're after...

Obscure enough for you? ;-)
