The telephone wire that comes into the house has six wires inside it, I phoned up my electrician and he said just connect wires 2, 3, and 5. On the packet it says for domestic use connect wires 2, 3, 4 and 5.

Which is right? I have to run broadband. What's the point of six wires if they don't need connecting?

Anybody shed some light on this please?

They both are right.

2,3 and 5 are required to complete the circuit.

4 only does something in certain scenarios, you may as well connect if you are in there.

you could get away with only 2 and 5 if the extension is capacative but you may as well do all of them.

When I wired a socket in my spare bedroom for the broadband I connected it straight into the BT box on the front of the house and there were only two wires connected to the whole house. Can't remember which ones, but it does confirm you only need two for broadband.

Pins 2 and 5 on an incoming line from BT to their master socket

Then 2,3 and 5 for distribution round the rest of the house to secondary socket.
