For those that have downloaded NVU (the open source HTML editor) and discovered one or two bugs I've stumbled upon the updated version. It's called KompoZer, same source as NVU 1.0 but has better CSS support and a fair few bugs killed.

Web site is www.kompozer.net/ and it's hosted at source forge.

I've never yet found one of these HTML editors that doesn't mangle my HTML.

O.K. I don't necassarily expect it to generate HTML that is formatted the way I would do it by hand, but if it's going to modify my HTML it could at least modify tags AND preserve my formatting in the HTML.

I guess experienced "web hands" would just pick the tags out of the autogenerate mess of HTML if they were going to edit the page directly, but I can just never see what is going on unless the tags are laid out neatly.

I think you mentioned this one before, and I gave up on it within about five minutes. Has this improved, because I could really use something that allows me to increase productivity, without compromising precision.

To be fair, if it was a professional piece of kit I was after then... it's got to be Dreamweaver. But for farting around generating templates for blogs and minor custom content then something like NVU or Kompozer will be fine. It does appear to mangle code though (has a weird 80 character per line thing).

I've never used dreamweaver, although everybody seems to rave about it. It's Adobe Dreamweaver now isn't it? Is it expensive and slow? Maybe I'll investigate!

Edited to add;

Yeah, I looked at their video. £400.... Oooooh suits you sir!
It does look like the muts nuts though. Maybe tomorrow.... or the day after!

I generally prefer handcoding in most instances for simple stuff, auto generated stuff can tend to irritate me sometimes wen it puts in bits and pieces when I dont want them or need them, but occaisionally it's useful I admit.

I do use dreamweaver a lot though, the ability to code and preview at the same time is good and the support for all sorts of extra coding languages and ability to put in stuff like rollover images in a couple of clicks is quite useful on occaision. If you need something done quickly then Dreamweaver is usually pretty good, however it has it's annoying quirks, which you need to live with.

Gimmie a break Dilbert I know that Dreamweaver carries a price tag that'd make the PHB's anus bleed, but you pays your money you takes your chances. After all, most of the free stuff has some serious quirks and bugs in it (other than notepad I'll grant you), so does Dreamweaver... having said that the few times I've played with it... speed hasn't been an issue.

So your choices are: Free and buggy or paid for and quirky.
