I'm starting a .NET development job soon, and as yet, have zero .net experience. Can anyone suggest the best place to pick up the basics?

I am web developer who's going to be using mainly C#.

For free, you can read a load of stuff here...
http://msdn.microsoft.com

Lots of other sites on the language and environment, Google will be your friend for a bit.

Though I'm baffled that you'd be employed to do something you've never done before with no mention of training (or even mentoring)...

Training will be provided, but I want to get a head start. I've been doing web development for years, just not in .NET

Have a look at www.asp.net

Lots of good examples focussing on the Web site, but the forum is rubbish!

Not that unusual - transferable skills....I'm a data analyst using SQL / Crystal Reports, having not used either before, but if you've done similar then the specifics can be picked up quickly. Knowing how to analyse data is much harder to learn - same goes for software deveopment.

If you've done any java before then it's the same. If you've never done any OO before then I'd get a book on that first and then look at the .net syntax.

Agree with the OO comment. Going from VBA in access and TSQL to .NET will be a steep learning curve. You will need to know the difference between Inheritance, Encapsulation & Polymorphism to name but a few concepts.

The bible at uni was always Grady Booch but there are 100's of others.

www.gotdotnet.com is also a good site.
