Does anyone know how best to record an AVI of speech through a normal laptop? (i take it I need to buy a microphone for it, I have an input socket for that) I know its more of a "Compooter" section question but they've probably all gone home now!

I need to record an AVI for a welcome message on our office phone system and am not sure where to get the best software for it?

Anyone any experience? help most appreciated.

I've moved this here not only because this is where you will get the right response but also because this was in the process of dropping onto the 3rd page of P&P where no one will ever see it.

Now. AVI is video do you mean audio?

If so all you need is a microphone plugged into the sound card of your computer, then open Windows Sound Recorder (you'll find that in the start menu-accessories-entertainment section.

This will save off the audio as a WAV audio file.

What audio format will your office system accept?

AVI isn't a video or an audio codec, its a container format, you can use WAV audio in an AVI.

As always, i'll recommend FFMpeg for converting WAV -> AVI Thats if your not afraid of a command line..

Such is ineptness it is infact a WAV file that I need to record the prompts in. I am playing with Freecorder and Polderbits sound recorder at the moment.

Just off to Matalin to buy a nicrophone.

Well yes I know, Audio Video Interleave, but you don't use an AVI format just for audio, it's normally used to show video with or without sound which was what I was asking. You don't want video on a phone message just sound so it would most likely be a different format needed, no one would use an AVI just for sound. Which is the case here.
