WMP11 doesn't seen to have the codecs that work with it to play certain encoded videos. I installed it a whil eback had the same problem, googled for help found loads of people saying the same thing, uninstalled WMP11 and the runtime rolled back to WMP10.

WMP is always a bit weird in what it will play and what codecs it will trust to use. best player is VLC player as it has codecs built in so no crappy dll errors and that like some installations of codec packs leave.

And if you still like the look of WMP you can get VLC skins to look like it or any others - www.videolan.org/vlc/skins.php

Couple of programs to assist:

GOMplayer - an excellent (IMHO) free player that comes with it's own codes, best thing is it will play damaged or incomplete avi files.

GSPOT - not a viewer, but open your movie in this and it will tell you which codecs you require to view it.

I'm 99% that both of these are free.
