My chipset fan squealed to a halt over the weekend on my Mesh SLi PC and finally died on me for good. All the WD40 in the world woulnd't save it this time.

After buggering around with the thing for a while, I've decided to actually remove the noisy little bugger once and for all. Will this cause any damage?

Because so far the machine is one hell of a lot quieter and keeping an eye on the temps nothing seems amiss without a fan there.

Mine died at some indetermined point on my mesh, I only found it when I came to install the water cooling and found all the thermal paste had turned into diamond hard crap that wouldn't come off.

I'd still replace it though if I were you.

Just ordered a Zalman NB47J. Looks rather fetching in blue too.

Any idea of what the motherboard is?
I'd replace it if I was you - if you're lucky it's an asus one and you can replace it with the heatpipe from the next model up; silent and cools better.

It's an Asus. What's this heatpipe thing?

You can often get away with out one, however it's best to replace it with either another 'blown' unit or one of the chunky Zalman units that have been pointed out. The Northbridge is the home to the HDD controllers amongst other things... it cooking itself is bad juju.

It'll be fine without most probably. Keep an eye on your temps though. Most mobos have a sensor on the northbridge. speedfan will be able to tell you what's going on. (or mbm5 if you're in the mood)

I have to open the case up and stick a regular house fan in front of it or it will overheat and shut off. so to answer your question, i need fans.
