This one is well under the Help file's radar.

I have two columns, H and I. For each row, I want Column I to be 85% of Column H.

It shouldn't be this hard, dammit!

In column I:

=SUM(h1/100)*85

Copy down throughout the length of values for H.

Thanks Dobbo, that's nothing like the formula in the Help files.

However the starting value in Column H is £10, and Column I now tells me that now 85% of that is '-'... I was rather hoping it would say '£8.50'! confused

Because your values in H are non-existent. Try filling the remaining fields and the results should appear.

It certainly should say £8.50 - I just tested and the presence of the £ sign doesn't seem to effect the calculation.

Where did the values in the cell come from - where they typed in or pasted in somehow?

If t'were me, I'd type =H1*.85 in cell I1 or am I missing something....

try simplifying the formula

in say I1

=H1*0.85

then copy down for all values in column H

That does it One teensy point I forgot to mention was that due to various titles, the top cell is H6 not H1 paperbag

Thanks all!

Edited to say - do I really have to go down the whole column thumping in the formula for each row, or is there a 'drag and select' way to say 'whatever's in this column, put 85% of it in this column'?

Put your formula in one cell, click the bottom-right corner of that cell with your mouse, and drag down as far as you want.

Blimey that's clever! It's just not very intuitive. Cheers :-)

even cleverer nerd

Click on the first cell with the formula - you'll notice a little back square bottom right. Double left click with the mouse on the little black square and it will fill all the formulas down as far as the values in the adjacent cells.
