itunes questions

I'm having some probs. When I open up preferences, the window is too long for my screen it seems, and I can't click on 'OK' at the bottom of the window. Thus no changes I make are saved. What is going on?
I'm trying to import music from a hard drive, but can't find a way to import more than one song at a time. I can't drag and paste from the seperate hd, only from My Music, so I have to move stuff from the hd into My Music and then drag, and then afterwards delete drom My Music, and delete from the recycle bin, all to stop my PC from filling up. How can I move folders from a seperate hd into itunes without it taking for ever?
What are the ! marks in the left hand column of the itunes music library for?

! = song/file not found or it's lost the link to it. Double click it and it'll ask you to find it - select Yes (or press return key) and it'll let you show where the file is - presuming you know where it is, if not deleted.
Use the Advanced tab in Preferences - under General, you can tell iTunes where the songs are. Check the options to keep organised, and copy music to Library folder.
Under Advanced of iTunes window - use Consolidate to find and add to the Library all mp3s, aacs, wmas, etc to iTunes.
You can delete the unwanted ones - but remember they'll now reside in the Music folder.
I'm not quite sure exactly what you're doing regarding the separate HDD, but al you have to do is grab the folder with all the songs in it, and drop on iTunes window. It'll add each song therein and move the files into the Music folder you selected in Preferences - if you checked the options above.
God blimey these ipods are geeky things aren't they?
I imported some pics to mine but now don't know how. I have a book called iPods and iTune s for Dummies, but I'm struggling to follow it, and its 390 pages long. The section on importing photos runs from page 316 to 320, but what I need is on page 323 but I still can't understand it and doesn't seem to refer to me, an ordinary user of an ordinary pc.
I think that the fact that the book for dummies is 390 pages long tells you a hell of a lot.

Erm... no offense but iPods's geeky?
Getting photos on them is incredibly simple, tell iTunes to manage photos, point it at C:Documents and Settings<username>My DocumentsMy Pictures (the default), tell it to get on with it.
It'll quietly process everything it finds and shunt them to the ipod, it can take a while depending on the number and size of the originals but...
Adding movies can be a hit n' miss affair if you start of with say a DivX movie as you'll need to transcode it then import it in to iTunes and from there to the iPod... but not terribly hard.

Can you not save the Prefs by pressing the Return key once you've made your changes?
Alternatively, buy a Mac!
Your Photos are in the Photo tab when you select the iPod on the right
As for the iTunes window - grab the window bar at the top and pull to the left. This will let you select the options for window sizes.
You are using the latest version of iTunes, aren't you?

I guess I mean that ipods are geeky because you have to do everything through itunes, and aren't able to use the ipod as a seperate hard drive like you can with some other mp3 devices.
I've changed my screen resolution from 800x600 to 1024x768 and that has made all the difference. I've also got rid of that registration page, so suddenly things are a lot simpler. previously that (and the resolution) was stopping me from getting inside my ipod.
I've imported some albums that I have as wma files, but it seems ipod insists on converting them as I import, rather than letting me import them then converting them as a batch overnight. Is that right?
I've managed to upload my first vid, the Ari vatenen at pikes peak one. I think this was already a quick time file (or a format acceptable to itunes, anyway), but itunes still had to convert it and I had to leave my pc to do this overnight, it was so slow. I can't seem to upload other files though. I don't get any messages to tell me why not, I just click on 'open file' in the 'add to library' window, the pc has a brief click and whir, then nothing. What do I need to do? The book for dummies is not at all clear on this, and indeed seems to be mainly configured to those who are going to buy everything through the itunes store.
Also, I have an audiobook stored on my hd, but itunes placed it into the music library. There is an audiobook library on the ipod itself but I can't find one in itunes. The dummies book tells me I can import them but again, only if I buy them from somebody (audible.com). Is there a way round this?

I honestly do believe now that you really need a Mac to make your life simpler.
There's no batch conversion - it's done in realtime as you drop the files onto the iTunes window.
In Preferences, you can enable/disable the various Libraries and iTunes Store - if you've Audiobooks enabled, then drag the audiobook file into it's window after you select it.
That'll keep them separate from the songs in the main Library folder.
Audible is the main player for audiobooks - but you can add and listen to any audiobook you download provided it's the correct format.
Audiobooks is in the main window of iTunes Store, on the left at the top - click on the link to see all the audiobooks available.
As for videos - mp4g is the format they need to be in for the iPod to be able to play them back. iTunes can play various video formats since it uses the computer's power to run less efficient codecs, but the iPod is limited to help keep battery life/costs reasonable.
So that would explain the conversion it did overnight.
iTunes also doesn't do wma, but rather wmv - so the moral of the story is use the platform agnostic format of mp3 for your songs and you'll be fine. To change the iPod's default encoding/transcoding from AAC to MP3 - go to Advanced tab in Prefs and select Importing.

Thanks for all that PJ, its more useful than the dummies book by far.
I've got that vid working on my ipod now, but...
I've got rid of all my music!
Honestly, all 1600+ songs!
God knows how long it'll take for all that lot to load back up, but I managed to lose it all in an instant.

ARRGH!!!
You've a major problem by the looks of it.
Box the PC up and send it back to where you bought it.
Likewise the iPod.
The reason being.............your as useful as a fart in a spacesuit and shouldn't be let loose near a computer, for yours and MY sanity!
Give me your address, and I'll send you some putty and a clock with a pendulum attached to it. I'll give you detailed instructions on how to assemble your NEW plaything.
Should go with a bang once you've put it together!

Nothing, but there was a loud BANG! according to eye witness statements from within the house shortly after a postal delivery.

Could it be that you are importing the files... just not synching them afterwards with your iPod???
No I've been synching and listening to music on the ipod. Been working hard at indexing the stuff as best as I can. Some of the music on my 300gig hd hasn't been indexed correctly.
I had a go at managing music manually when trying to get the video and audiobook to load, and unchecked the music files so that the ipod would only upload the items I wanted. So maybe the ipod synched and there was no music checked in the music library.
My Griffin TuneCenter dock has arrived now, and my ipod is still slowly uploading its music.
Stick with proper standards for movies/video and MP3 for music, and you'll be absolutely fine.
It's the bastardisation of video codecs in the Windows domain that's the problem - there's no need for most of them.
It's all bollox when WMV and MP4A and MPEG4 work just fine.
AVI, DivX, and a whole host based on these with unnecessary adjustments to make another codec is where the whole thing falls flat on its face.

Noooo, I'm not giving up.
I've had no probs with the Creatives and iRivers I've used in the past, they're just a seperate hard drive and you dump stuff in them merrily. I reckon an ipod probably is better used with a Mac, and its probably better if you just spend hundreds of pounds in the itunes store. I don't think its happy with me trying to listen to the thousands of albums I acquired for free.
I've got the music back on now anyway. This video that I'm trying to get on - it was great on the TV via the Griffin, but no sound (picture quality was bloody good though for what it is). I've got the sound on the ipod, but no movie laugh .
I still say it though - ipods are too geeky. They're no doubt fine for those who spend their lives at a pc, but I can't so I'm finding it hard work.

I had always considered them too geeky too but recently succumbed. The ability to travel and take everything with me convinced me in the end.
Normal listening for me is valves and vinyl though so the digital thing is quite a step down in quality. The sound through those headphones is a bit ropey so I bought the Fatman iTube and it makes a half decent noise now. There is something about a valve driven iPod that makes me smile!

Get youself a "Total Bithead" headphone amp and a pair of Shure e500 phones, and with a lossless CODEC an iPod can play a decent tune imo.
Love the Fatman also..........

Hope things are better for you now.
Video:
To get video onto iPod, I use the free (& excellent) Videora converter software. Point it at the video that you want on your ipod & it converts it to a suitable format & saves it.
Then in iTunes use the "Add file to library" option, choose the newly transcoded video, then sit back for a few seconds. It's then added to iTunes & will sync to your ipod.
Music:
I had a large (>30 Gb) library of music encoded in WMA - I then used the convert tool in iTunes (after checking that the bitrate for MP£ encoding was ste OK (Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Importing > Encoding) - I chose 192kbps MP3 and pointed iTunes to store its music where I wanted.
A quick way to amend track / artist details is to select all tracks, right click, then choose "Get Details" - you can then type details for the album / artist / etc for the whole album. You can also add artwork here if you so desire.
Hope that helps
Chris

£420 for in-ear earphones is an awful lot of money! Bearing in mind it’s only an iPod (and the iPod is only £250!) are they really worth it?
To be honest I am not really a fan of those little earphones and I never really intended to use the iPod that way. I bought it with the iTube for my office and also a cable to hook up to phono inputs at home.
Has anyone tried an Earmax valve headphone amp on an iPod?
