My nano will not update. It will charge and otherwise seems to work, but I keep getting communication errors when trying to add tracks, or try and restore to factory defaults. The last opperation to work was to remove all tracks. Bugger...

However, I can actually manually copy files on to it with explorer. Given I can do this, how and where would I manually copy tracks.

Normally i'd just bin it and buy another but given it has withstood me taking it to pieces, in an attempt to try and fix it, I feel I owe it one more chance...

That's very weird. I'd suggest bolting it to iTunes and telling it to restort the nano to factory settings. if Explorer can copy files to/from the device without problems... then it would suggest the connectors are good and the majority of the drive is fine.

It could be the the database has got itself tied in all sorts of knots, so wiping the device and going at it from scratch is a good place to start.

Make sure you have the very latest version of iTunes 7 as the earliest release caused all sorts of problems (just google for 'ipod wont synchronize'). Mine wouldn't be found by iTunes but it still showed up as a removable disk.

...update

Well I tried some combination of unplugging the Nano when it told me not too, causing a fit of some sort. Grabbed the explorer box that popped up and manually deleted everything! Reconnected, which it complained about, then it started to try and update. Hay presto, we are all happy again. Now you have to understand, I pulled this thing totally to pieces, not really taking much care over how I did it (given I was about to bin it anyway), and the little bugger now works again.
