Most distros are available as live CDs

Knoppix is probably the most widely used one

The Knoppix Live CD seems to boot up on more diverse hardware than most and is a good 1st choice, but as others have said most Linux distros have a Live CD now.

Indeed, this is what I've used in the past when I've needed a quick linux boot.

Care to recommend a source? (Not heard of/tried these before, but might prove a useful string to my bow).

www.knoppix.org and click on the 'English' icon

(Or to go straight there with www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html )

Edit: Never thought the day would come when I was giving advice on Linux! hehe

Sucks a bit, but for some reason I get to the desktop, all works well thus far, but can't seem to get it to install.. Just sits there twiddling it's thumbs....

I had a lot of trouble getting Ubuntu / Kubuntu to install on my desktop and went for CentOS in the end (which is the free distro based on the Red Hat source) which installed fine.

CentOS is my 'user friendly' choice of Linux OS for clients who need a 'softer' option to FreeBSD but dont need the extra support / safeguards of RHEL

it's a great OS.

Well, ubuntu still won't install. I ended up using PCLinuxOS, which is quite nice. Not as good visually as Ubuntu, but oh well.
