I'm just in the market for a new laptop at the moment. Does anyone have any recommendations of where to get one? I've tried dabs and laptopshop so far.

If I buy a Lenovo laptop, how easy is it to add RAM? The one I'm looking at has 1GB but space for 4GB, apparently. Does the RAM just plug in somewhere inside?

Thanks in advance for your help. beer

Lenovo's from Dabs are a good choice generally speaking.

Re the RAM question, yes it just plugs in inside. Sometimes theres a free slot, sometimes you have to throw away a lower capacity stick and replace it with a higher capacity one - depends on the exact model of laptop. 1GB is fine for a lappy though unless you're doing something hardcore.

Great, thanks for the info.

I have 512MB in my Toshiba at the moment, and I can see I need more than that. Photoshop isn't bad, but Nikon Capture is absolutely glacial. RAM is cheap these days, so I thought I may as well add some more. Fast is good. cool

Hmm yes big photos are quite RAM hungry... as for weather to buy 2GB or 1GB out of the box I suppose depends on how tight the budget it?

Also it depends on how afraid of taking things apart you are... Laptops being tight on space, you often need to do a bit of dismatling to get at the RAM expansion socket(s).

The IBM/lenovo laptops, as most laptops, have a panel on the bottom for most user upgradable parts. Looking at my old T42 it only has a port for memory; my older T41 had one for memory, one for the funky mini pci modem, and one for the mini pci graphics card.

You can get 4Gb ram for laptops at the moment, but they are specialised sticks, which cost many £££ check out the upgrade prices yikes

I would recommend at least 2Gb ram these days, 1Gb wont cut it for long, but 4Gb is too expensive for laptops.

I've been thinking of getting a Rock Computer for my next laptop, seem to have some good performance for price deals, not sure exactly what you are looking for though.

Thanks for your help, everyone. beer

I eventually settled for a Lenovo Z61M with an extra 1GB of RAM, so 2GB in total. That'll do for now.

Coming next week: SGirl in "why doesn't my new laptop do what I want it to?" shocker... hehe
