After a slightly disappointing comedy night at the Bearcat Club in Twickenham (if you are familiar with locale) i come back to find my computer has lost it's memory.

It forgets what drives i have, the time, everything.

A quick search on Google tells me my CMOS battery has died.

Sob. Why does it have to do this to me? Still recovering from a miserable cold as well.

You think you have it bad. One of my lightbulbs blew today, I think it's just trying to get back at me for my flirtations with those new energy saving ones. The jealous bastard.

Indeed, peculiar how they get brighter before they die..

thought this was going to be another sycophantic RIP thread..

Ah CMOS,what a great bloke. He`ll be sorely missed by his peers. A tragic loss to his father Stirling, and his daughter Kate.

Now I`ll wait for another PHer to come along and post what a complete pillock CMOS was and how he`s glad he`s dead. No loss to anyone apparently

This, THIS, is what happens when you post computer stuff in the P&P. Serious answer: CMOS batteries are more often than not, generic watch batteries (2020 or 2012 size) open your machine, pop the little sucker out of it's home on the motherboard and go get a new one from H. Samuel or sny watch repair place.

Is it sad i walked into this thread knowing it would be about a computer?

also i would just like to add that cmos really let himself go in his later years letteing himself get into depraved high voltage all night orgies and then playing with the motherboard whilst she was asleep hehe

CR2032 lithium coin cells are the most common size and even corner shops often have them these days.

1) Open the case, look for the big watch battery
2) Get another one from Maplin for a couple of pounds, insert it
3) ....
4) Profit

No,

1. Turn off power.
2) Open the case, look for the big watch battery
3) Get another one from Maplin for a couple of pounds, insert it
4) ....
5) Profit

Changing the battery with mains connected could end up in "loss".

Thanks, it's all sorted now. My sincere apologies for posting a geek-related topic boxedin

By some coincidence the key fob of my old Civic has exactly the same battery. It perished recently and has thus donated its power-source to my motherboard.

Toastie.

Just leave the PC on forever, problem solved, and spend the £3 you saved on a nice cold pint!

CR2032's? Well it has been a long time since a BIOS battery has died on me. All the old machines I took apart were... 2020's... I think. Anyway, it's a watch battery, easy to replace
