Has anyone had weird issues with NTL the past week?

all the following has been tested on 3 windows machines a linux machine and a PDA!

Google stops working and some other sites but pistonheads usualy works..

I get utorrent woirking all the time yet can't access most sites, if i ping google.co.uk it will get a reply.. if i go to the IP address then that works and then i can access google.co.uk after that.. anoither way around it is if i reboot my linksys router it then works..

I have swapped routers and still had same issue so isn't my router, if i reboot the modem it starts working to but then randomly stops again.

I changed DNS servers and that worked but then still decided to cut out again.

It's very weird and doing my head in and can't explkain why its only webpages thayt dont work.

So my conclusion if im not wrong is:

Not my OS as tested over diffrent operating systems
Not my PC as tested on multiple machine
Not my router as swap tested

So you reckon NTL would be able to do anything or you reckon i should just wait for it to fix itself?

NTL use a transparent proxy which may explain why it's only the port 80 stuff that's affected.

What happens if you run nslookup queries against their DNS servers?

will have to try that next time it stops, i think that that will work tho as ping will resolve domain to IP and uses nslookup as far as i know to do that.

You have to be careful drawing conclusions like that. nslookup (at least on non-Windows machines) bypasses the operating systems resolver libraries, so nslookups can work fine, but the O/S still can't resolve names.

NTL? Yep. It happens. Usually rebooting the STB/Modem will be enough, although I've seen it go on past that.

It is a damn weird DNS issue as you can ping them but bugger all will resolve, almost like port 53 just gets slammed in your face randomly. Anything that is already in your local cache of such things keeps on trucking.

I ended up speaking to their backroom boys about it once. You can ping the DNS servers but nslookup 'em and they'll have none of it. Seems like the service gets it's knickers in a twist.

Honestly doesn't surprise me. They're mail servers (both POP3 and SMTP) aren't the most reliable of things... although have improved recently. I guess to many users and not enough backend investment, same as a lot of ISP's that just go flat out for users without doing the math behind supporting them.

The only major gripe I have is the length of time it takes them to fix issues like POP3 being unavliable, the record is 12 hours and yep, I was rebooting the STB every so often just in case it was a local issue.

I once got DDOS attacked and had around 200 connections per second! and phoned NTL up to ask them if there is a way they can release the MAC and IP cach from the local server exchange because i could actualy get a connection stablised to NTL because of the attack and they were like well can you reboot your mode.. and wenrt through all that telling them that i knew EXACLY what was wrong but there all so scripted they dont listen! lol

I added DNS server 4.2.2.4 the other day and since then ive had no issuies with website except google is a bit slow resolving ot load site but spose is better than nothing.

The weirdest thing about it is as soon as for example i went to http://216.239.37.99 then suddenly all other PCs on network would work for www.google.co.uk :S

Very weird, i must say NTL has been great so far for past 6-7 years thast i've had it ive only had a few hickups
