For some reason unknown to me, the option to set the recording quality on my Media Center PC just isn't there!

It appears as if it is stuck on the lowest setting judging by the amount of disk space it is using, but the option to change it just isn't there! It appears in the help file, on the MS website, everywhere, except where it should be!

Anyone have any ideas why it isn't there?

No idea personally but I'd check the generic things. Windows Update, do you have drive space for high end recording, is the TV card working properly (latest drivers), does that TV card have any limitations known about (check google).

I'd also give defragging the drive a whirl, probably won't do anything useful but worth try just in case MCE is sensitive to fragmentation.

It's a pretty new Acer Aspire iDea Media Centre PC. The newer drivers off the Acer site seem worse than the supplied ones as they failed to detect the 2 digital tuners. There is a dedicated 250GB drive for recording onto.

Ok and what about drivers from the manufacturers website? The ones who made the cards as opposed to the box shifter I mean

If it's under waranty, give Acer's tech support people a call. Seriously, it might be something stupid like "yeah, install plugin X from the CD" or "Yeah, it's broken, we'll ship you a new one. Sorry about that.".

I've not tried that with the under card, I'll give that a go.

I called Acer's tech support with a problem with the FM radio, it took a good few minutes for me to convince the bloke that the system wasn't an MP3 player, he was clueless. When he finally worked out what it was, he could only suggest re-installing the system with the supplied disks as "as that usually fixes things"... Great!

Did they give you a ticket number? If not call them again and see what happens, make sure you request a trouble ticket opened and if Teir 1 are playing reinstall games ask politley but forcefully to be escaltated to Teir 2 / Supervisor level, this will often be another Teir 1 jocky, he'll work through the same script but stick to your guns and you'll eventually get someone useful.

I've found a few times when I've rung I've had some random muppet on the phone and he's played reinstall games, when I ask for the ticket number the line drops, ring back... nothing logged, could of been speaking to the cleaner due to phone line fubar.
