This morning some of the filenames have had the extension changed to .lnk. The files such as .doc and .jpg open the appropriate application but I cant see what has caused this

Any ideas? Details are sketchy cos the computer is not in front of me so I am trying to find details from the operator.

lnk files are simply shortcuts to another file. If you right click them you can select "Properties" you will see a target value which tells you where the shortcut is pointing to.

Assuming this is the original file, then it should mean you haven't lost anything.

.lnk is a "link" shortcut to a file - so the file will be somewhere else (different folder). You haven't drag and dropped them somewhere, whilst holding alt key have you?

Tigger, that would be possibly the cause as they were trying to backup files last night. They may have relocated the folder. Doh
