I have a laptop that is not very old and it has started running slow and with a few pauses,I have defragged it and used the disk clean up programme but it is still not any quicker is there anything I can do to help with the performance of it, I do have a lot of things stored on it though I would imagine that this would slow it down quiet a lot wouldn't it.

No, the amount of data on the drive really won't have any impact on the speed of the system.

I would recommend running the usual utilities, SpyBot S&D, AdAware, regcleaner and so on. I'd also look at what's running on your system; have you installed something like a Norton, Symantec or McAfee product (they have a tendancy to go pop and suck resources... well more resources than normal).

Is it pausing during any specific thing or is it just random?

Try taking a look (assuming 2k or XP) in the Event Viewer in Control Panel > Administrative Tools, see if anything is happening around the time of a pause.
