All hotmail users used to be able to do it but they changed it not so long ago so that only the ones who pay a few quid a year or whatever it is can use that service. That said, when it happened they sent me an email to say that cause I was using it they wouldnt turn it off on my account so its not a 100% hard and fast rule.

Google 'hotmail popper' as I think this will get you around the restriction.

confused Works fine for me and I don't pay Hotmail any money. The only downside is that it doesn't download the messages, so you'll use Outlook to view the messages rather than store them on your computer.

To set it up go to Tools -> E-mail Accounts -> Add a new e-mail account

Select 'HTTP' from the list and click next, on the next screen fill in all your details and make sure 'Homtail' is selected under HTTP mail service provider.

It depends how long you have had your hotmail account. I can't remember the cutoff date but MS stopped allowing new accounts to work with Outlook unless you pay for the premium version.

For once I don't think this was a MS money grabbing exercise. The reason they did it was it is much easier to spam people from outlook than via the HTTP interface. Spammers would rather use a free email account than have to pay for one, particularly since one you pay for can be traced back to you.

I have had my Hotmail account for years and had it linked to Outlook but I can't pull email through anymore, so it seems to be luck rather than whether you have had it before
