Trying to install Messenger 6.0 (it does the same for installing 5.0 too) and get this message coming up:

Any ideas how to solve this? I'm fed up with 4.5 as it's pants

TIA

Looks like you are logged on the your PC with insufficent privalages. If you have multiple users that can log on to your PC then log on with the one that has administrator access.

You can find a list of users and their access status in the control panel.

If not then I'm stuck!!

Good luck.

Danny, I've checked the users list in control panel and of the 2 users there are (Mine and the General one for the parents) none have said privilages

I think I'm stuck in hole.

Fundamentally unless you are an administrator on a windows PC you will run into problems installing applications sooner or later. This is the problem you are facing. If it is in a work environment it is a good idea to stop "home experts" installing the latest wacky doo gadget that completely f**ks up the network. If it's at home then it's stil a good idea to control what gets installed, especially if someone is let loose with an AOL CD..............

Get Admin rights for your PC and you will be sorted.

Try logging off, Start, log off.

Then when you are prompted with the name to log in as type over it with Administrator, when you are prompted for the password just hit return. There is a possibility that whowever set up the machine created the admin account with no password.

If there is a password there is a way around it.

There is a window with 'Graham' and 'General' in it when I log off, these are my two profiles, neither have passwords and there is nowhere to type 'administrator' in the box.

First, make sure neither profile is logged on. Then, hit ctrl, alt and delete twice - your logon box will appear then

Sorry, I'd jumped to the conclusion that you were using XP...

In that case, it could be that your Internet Explorer security is set to high, not allowing ActiveX controls.

Is it ME that you're using? It doesn't have any administrator security settings.

You might like to check in I.E.:
Tools, Internet Options, Security tab. If your Internet Zone settings are on "custom", you might want to make a note of them, to reset them (click on the "custom level" button to access these).

Check your ActiveX settings - anything obvious there that would prevent installation? Otherwise, just reset the security level for this zone to default (medium) & try again to install. After a successful installation, you may want to reset this again to custom.

Failing this, are all of the latest Windows updates / service packs installed? What version of Internet Explorer are you using?

Is this Windows messenger or MSN messenger you are trying to download? , and where are you downloading from? .The latest version of Windows messenger is 4.7 for XP and for MSN messenger it appears to be 5.0. Having trouble finding a ver 6.0. I think problem may be security of I.E in not allowing download of ActiveX components.

Jeff:
MSN 6.0 (very nice it is, too!) is still in Beta, not due for release until July 17th. Previews can be obtained from: www.bigblueball.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3578
This is only for XP though, to the best of my knowledge.

Graham:
Perhaps the version of MSN 5.0 that you tried to download is also the XP version? I'd be inclined to leave version 6.0 alone for now, unless you can confirm that an ME version is available?

Graham,

Blimey....nice one mate.

Hmmm, couple of ideas:

1) Click Start menu, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Information. On the Tools menu, click Registry Checker. You may receive the following error message:

"Windows encountered an error accessing the system registry. Windows will restart the computer and repair the system registry for you."

If you receive this error message, go to step 3.

If you do not receive the error message, follow these steps to repair damage to the registry:

Quit all programs that are running.
Click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type the following and then click OK:
scanreg /fix

Click Yes to restart the computer when finished ( or OK, can't remember the prompt OTTOMH.

Another idea springs to mind: are you using the correct Messenger program for WinME?

Sorry mate, the Scanreg is all I can think of as it sounds like registry corruption.

Ah, must have missed this one earlier.

No problem mate - sorry about the formatting - it was going to be 1) 2) 3) but I just braindumped what I thought it could have been so the formatting went out of the window.

Glad you got it sorted. ME upgrades to XP quite easily, and its a proper OS, for your info.

Cheers,

Greg
