active directory and domains

can a active directory server/service exist in parallel with a nt4 domain on the same network ? i need to intergrate the 2 systems into one over a period of time

They can coexist but if you are networking servers over WAN links then please note that you can get authentication issues with the NT4 servers should the links go down. Ie. They refuse to authenticate a logon even though they could be a BDC. If you are networking then I would advise you rollout W2K DC's to each location ASAP.

Seconded. For max benefit you might consider ISA servers as well for WAN use...

we use the AD client software, works fine.
