I have just replaced my old SCSI CD re-writer (which was 5 years old, and worked hard!) with an IDE DVD/CDRW combo drive.

However, when using audio production software (Cool Edit Pro and Soundforge CD Architect) I can no longer extract audio (rip) directly from the CD.

The drive I have fitted is a Ricoh MP9120A-DP

I can capture the audio via analogue methods, but it is SO time-consuming!

Any ideas anyone?!

Re-install your extraction software.

Replcing a SCSI drive with an IDE one is frought with peril in this instance as most CD ripping (and even writing) type software install specific drivers or driver interfaces based on the type of CD that you have in the system when the software is installed...

...Just keep your fingers crossed when doing the above fix. It is not unknown to have to reload the entire OS to fix this problem.

Ade,

Try something like CDEX which is quick

http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/

or Exact Audio Copy which is slower but more accurate and has better error correction

www.exactaudiocopy.de/

Both packages are FOC and are not driver specific.

I've always used WinDAC but your recommendation of Exact Audio Copy looks interesting.

Does anyone know of an equivalent for DVDs?

Hmmm... the fault appears to have rectified itself!

I hate it when that happens!

DVDDecryptor will do exact DVD copies but only for single layer stuff.

DVDShrink allows you to squash a dual layer DVD down to 4.3GB by either applying consistent compression across the board, or it allows you to choose which bits of the DVD you want to compress and how. EG, compress all the menus and extras to the max and compress the main movie only a small amount.

Both products Googleable, free and work well (so I've been told )
