I recently purchased a Veho VFS-004 negative scanner. Installed the drivers and software on my Windows XP MCE PC and all worked fine, until I rebooted and then the PC had the blue screen error shown below. After lots of system restore and retrying, simply installing the scanner driver on my system and rebooting cuased the error, without even attaching the device. I've tried both the supplied driver on CD and the latest download on their site.

Their tech support has been no help, they just do not respond. The supplier has tried their best, but cannot help either. I've tried the MS site for this error, but no resolution worked.

The PC is fully up to date with all service packs and was only rebuilt in Novemeber so relatively clean. Any advice?

What interface does the scanner use - is it USB?

Looks like duff RAM to me - 0x0000008E is a memory stop error.

How many sticks in your machine, I'd guess 2 sticks of 1Gb? If so, remove one and see if it continues to BSOD. If it does, swap the RAM sticks over and see if it still does it. That'll tell you which stick is dodgy. Worth checking everything's seated correctly inside - it's not uncommon for something to become dislodged or get nudged when doing something else.

If it's neither stick of RAM, it might be RAM on the graphics card. Have you got the latest NVidia driver installed?

0x0000008E is a Kernel mode error that points to hardware or driver incompatibility/faults.

Either the scanner drivers are duff of you have a hardware issue that said drivers, manage to trigger.

Is your Mainboard BIOS up to date?

Since posting this, I installed the device on a spare XP laptop. This seemed to work until I tried to use it, them it froze and BSOD. This would indicate a driver problem. Latest driver, updated graphics and still failing.

Reluctant to try wife's Vista laptop

Are you sure the scanner driver is XP-compatible?

the error code given on the above BSOD is about as much use as Bob Mugabe.

It can mean a million+1 things. It's very vague.

However, the majority (imo,) do point to a s/w issue, specifically either the kernal or security.

With it happening on all machines, it might be worth taking it back?

Twice you've tried it on your system, and once on another - yet the same fault repeats itself.

just a note; do other devices work OK from the USB port?

Interestingly, the error is different on the two machines. On my PC, it boots to the login page but BSOD when I actually log in. On the laptop, everything is fine until I try to import the picture from the device.

Also, I can load the software, scan negatives, manipulate and save on my PC fine, in fact it all works really well, until I reboot and that's when it all goes wrong.

Drivers are definitely XP compatible. All other devices work on the USB ports and as I said above, if I install and use it without rebooting, it works fine.

When I reboot, it must load the device driver which causes the issue.

A quick work-round, but by far a solution, would be to disable the process from starting when you log in?

Hope this isn't patrionising:

goto the start bar, select run and type in msconfig.
on the top, select the tab marked Startup.

Locate the process which points to the scanner software (scroll to the right, and it ought to list the folders.)

Untick the box, click on apply, then choose Save changes and reboot.

When you log in, the software isn't being loaded, so should work ok. However, ensure to load the software once the rest of the system has finished loading.

If it works, it'll do hehe

As for the laptop though !?! bugger.
Go to even viewer on the laptopn and check whether the error has been reported. This should give you the source (which part of the scanner software,) and the fault. Try sticking the fault into google, see what is found.
