Me - Mobile phone contract with fruity supplier which ends in May 2009.
Wifey – PAYG mobile with same fruity supplier

November 2008

New employer provides work mobile on the oxygen network – all expenses covered
Fruity supplier says cancelling my existing contract will cost £80
Decide to move Wifey’s PAYG number to my contract, Wifey keeps her PAYG phone and gets contract terms.
My contract phone thrown in cupboard…

April 2009

Fruity supplier rings offering free phone upgrade on contract, can be taken anytime with 12 month contract extension.

Wifey happy with current handset, doesn’t want to change it

But could we / should we take the upgrade offer anyway and get a new phone which can then be given / sold? Any pitfalls / problems beyond network restriction and registration?

Negotiate a discount on the contract price if you don't want a new handset, can usually get them to take the price down quite a bit. Saves the hassle of selling the new handset when it arrives.
