who is it hosted on? Essentially you are after a sendmail routine, but these vary dramactially with hosts. The best answer is to email them, explain you are a novice and are wanting to know what they support. Often they send you back a pre-sorted file to use.

Colin,

You don't need anything fancy at all. All you need to do is set the form action with your email address:

<form action="mailto:youremailaddress@here.com" method="post">
<\form>

Between the form tags, you'll need <input> tags to capture the data (ie firstname, surname etc)

Mail me offline if you want

Good luck

The one downside of this is that it requires the client machine (the one accessing the website) to be equipped with a fully configured e-mail client (Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, etc, etc). This is almost never the case for people that use webmail as their primary address.

Agreed Marshy. The prefered option would be something like CDONTS or javax.mail and alike. However after speaking with Colin, that wasn't an option.

Regular forms are perl scripts that run in the cgi bin using the form-post command.

However I am just putting live an engine which lets me build forms for sites which are php based. Web Developer you see, not just a saddo Computer geek!! Using php you can do a lot more with the error checking and data validation stuff that you can't do easily with perl.

Would be able to get you a form built for cheap once I am live, if you fancy. It would route through your site and email addresses so would look pukka with no outside ads and all that nonsense!!

Let me know.

Actually, I think Perl and PHP are both equally combat-capable when it comes to input validation and Perl's "slice it any way you like" string handling is hugely useful in this area.

PHP is probably a more sane langauge than Perl is though

And I hope by "on the cheap" you mean "for free". A single php page as the desintation for a form POST action to gather data and e-mail it to someone isn't a chargeable item. Ever.

I hope your not inferring anything there sunshine, whilst you're pissing around with MySQL and PHP, some of us big boys are playing with real enterprise stuff. My background is certainly NOT as a 'computer saddo', I have a string of degrees and qualifications, together with a number of years in IT that would indicate otherwise, a few key ones like Oracle OCP Master, certified Sun (J2EE architect) to name but a few...

If you're NOT inferring anything sinister, then fair do's, and run along nicely like a good little troll.

I'm happy you guys have posted, but having spoken to Colin directly, the issue is well in hand. However, comments from Marshy are particularly valid as a more suitable long term solution.

Whoa Fatsteve calm down! Not inferring anything, I am glad to hear you are ably qualified abd thanks for your CV, only trying to give some help in this open forum!! It is not my wish to upset anyone let alone a veritable Tech God as yourself, just come on here to chat about cars and the like and offer my views here and there.

Why are techies always talking about trolls though? Game of D&D anyone, maybe not.
