Hello You Lot,

I've just recieved my I-phone which was purchased for me in Italy, and which I was reliably informed I would just be able to pop my vodafone sim card into and I'd be away with all of the worlds creamy i-phone goodness and none of that pesky O2 monopoly unlockness (to say I was brimming with nerdy excitement is a subtle understatement. Ok, so Im year too late for this party, but- whatever- it's here now and that's all that matters).

The only trouble is, it isn't working. When I turn on the phone without the sim it says 'please insert an unlocked sim' and when I insert my sim it only allows me to make emergency calls only, and no other menu option is available to do anything else. Or, at least anything I can figure out.

So, anyone have any clues as to what I have to do to get working at least as well as- say- an expensive paper-weight?

Thanks in advance,
N.

Ps Apologies if this is the wrong part of the P&P for this sort of thing- I've also put something in the computers bit but the P&P moves much faster and I want to play with my bloody I-Phone NOW, damn you. Mods, feel free to text or call if this is a problem biggrin

I think it may only work with an O2 sim. But I could be wrong.

Type something along the lines of 'how to make vodafone sim cards work in an iPhone', but obviously shorter biggrin.

I was told that phones bought in the Uk from O2 were all regsitered to O2, but that phones purchased abroad where o2 dont have the monopoly will work just fine. Im on Vodafone and the phone was purchased from Vodafone. I was told this meant ok-ness all round and should just be plug in and go.

I have the plugged in part. Its the go Im short on.

You do need to activate it even with an O2 sim card (via iTunes) and presumably this is the bit you're missing... can't be any help with Vodafone unfortunately though I have a new iPhone with O2 this week and it is fab I have to say apart from the battery life which is appalling smile

According to my hubby you could unlock it (called jailbreaking apparently) but not to be undertaken lightly cos if you fk it up there is no way to get it fixed (Apple won't sort it because terms and conditions broken). Even if you do manage this you won't be able to use the much of the data that you probably wanted the Iphone for in the first place.

I hope this makes some sort of sense, I was trying to memorise what he said as he was going off up to bed! He has the Iphone not me!

Can you use your old phone to get the contacts into the windows address book or even better, Outlook? If you can, then you can easily sync from the WAB or Outlook to the iPhone smile

Nice biggrin Hope you have unlimited data on Voda - their costs are outrageous from what I remember - looking at the amount of data transferred over the last couple of days I wouldn't want to be paying for it that's for sure!

erm...what? do I need to upgrade my voda account? I was planning to use my wifi connection to surf mostly- will I need to tell it to only use my home wifi rather than connect via my mobile? or is this not possible?

You could turn on off 3G browsing for a start, and tell the phone never to connect to pick up emails etc. unless you physically do it.
No idea about Vodafone, but o2 do data 'packs' that you can add to your contract for a few quid a month.
That'd be my choice, as it's such a nice thing to piss around on the net on! thumbup

you can turn 3G off in the settings, and data roaming etc. (settings > general > network). If you've got your email set up through the phone you might want to set it to check manually too.

You can check your data usage in Settings > general > usage and you should see it at the bottom.

I'd give vodafone a bell though, seems a shame to throttle the phone if you can wangle some free data to get the most out of them.

Ok, one final thing, then I'll shut up and go away, I promise. How do I set this up so I can check my emails? remember, you're talking with an idiot, now.

Settings, Mail/Contacts/Calendar, Add Account...

Should be self explanatory.
If it's POP3/SMTP then hit Other and type in all the details (server name etc)
