Can anyone be as kind as to recommend me a new laptop?

Not wanting anything too expensive or special, as it will only be for surfing and general use. Not too bothered about getting a refurb, as long as it comes with a warranty lol.

Budget: £3-400.

Thanks.

This is the best i have found so far, but i dont really have a clue when it comes to computer/laptop spec. Here

Not heard an awful lot of good things about Dell. :/

There are a few brands I would personally avoid, I think Dell is the top of my list.

My Asus laptop has never let me down and I have heard very good things about Acer, mainly low price and high spec.

Dell IME have been very good. I've never had one single problem, and have had 3 computers from them. Likewise acer, I'm on my second and they've been faultless. They're the cheapest as well. You win some, you lose some. I've not lost one!

My ASUS is my favourite laptop. As it has never messed up on me.

This is out of my selection of Dell/HP/Toshiba/Asus

IBM Thinkpad.

I've used T42's for about 4 years now for work and home and they are excellent, I usually get mine refurbed for under £200.

They are indestructable and I have never had a problem with any of them.

NYK, looked at the T42, Specs seem to vary quite wildly, do you have a link from a supplier you recommend?

Everyone else; Model numbers or links please! smile

Cheers,

Aye, bought a gaming machine thinking it'd keep me out of the pub while I'm away from home.... mostly used as high speed means of accessing PH and other fora I frequent and the daily voipstunt home!

I've had 3 over the past 10 years and never had any problems. Similarly my folks have had about 4, only changing them for an upgrade.
Have a look at their outlet and see if you can beat that for value.

Use them for work all the time and they're absolutely fine.

Toshiba's used to be cracking machines, but have got a bit wobblier over the past few years.

As long as you have no intentions of playing any games, then your budget gets you some nice laptops. Pop into Tesco's extra as they always have a good selection, Dell included. smile
I'm on my 2nd Acer, who are also worth a consideration

My life in laptops

The Dells I have had have been great, with amazing after sales support as well. (I broke the floppy drive on one in an evening, rang support in Alaska, a new one was waiting for me at work the next morning)

HP was rubbish and plastic

Ti also bad

Toshiba pretty good apart from the screen hinge

IBM Thinkpad - the case has cracked in 3 places and flexes about

Acer not bad, but battery life a bt poor

The latest addition Asus EEE PC is performing very well, and so light to carry around!

I've had numerous dell desktops and laptops over the last 10+ years and I've been very pleased with them all.

The occasional problem has been dealt with very promptly via their support contract.

The best advice at your budget is to get the most bang for buck really. Dell cant really compete with Asus and Acer when it comes to that area. Check ebuyer for some good laptop deals or Acerdirect.

Got my Dell from Tesco, picked it up on the cheap as it was the last of the last years model. Its still a very good laptop, just not good for gaming.
