Amateur/Ham Radio

I'm looking to get into the hobby and already have read the Foundation book,done a few mock tests and now looking at booking the exam.

Are there any Ph'ers into this sport of a dying breed? I'm just wanting other opinions on equipment really and a bit of mentoring

Still got an FT101 around somewhere. Living in listed warehouse apartments isn't handy for setting up large yagi arrays however...

A friend of mine is a ham. He and his buddies use to do DF competitions where one of them hides up in a bush and transmits, and the others have to find him. Quite good fun actually - expecially when you're lying under a camouflage net and they walk straight past you

Another time, after dark, and based on the fact that DFers tend to walk round the edges of things, we set up in the middle of a large field so we were out of torch range from the edges. We were almost compromised by some inquisitive cows! (I guess they were 'radio beefs'...)

Damn. I let my licence lapse when I moved into a flat. I just remembered that was 15 years ago, and I now have a 100 foot back garden. Anyone know where we are in the sunspot cycle?

Been licenced for years and havn't been on air since around 1996.

Unusally I learned a lot from the exam and the hobby that I ended up using in others areas of my carrear and met some now life long friends.

Don't wish to be patronising or condescending (genuinely) but what on earth do you talk about? Isn't it rather talking for talking's sake or, like this website, there are people who tune in on a particular frequency to talk about a particular subject (cars, TV, etc.)?

99% of all mobile phone traffic is pointless chatter 'I'm nearly home dear' etc. It's very popular!
