DVD ripping

Hi all,

I am going away for a while and want to take some DVD with me to watch on the way. Whats the best way to rip a DVD and whats teh best software ~(Free) to do this.

I have got a 200Gig External firewire drive to store them on.

Also how much space will one film take up
