I have started to build my own webpage, lots of useless stuff really...

The webspace i will be using is the 50mb free i get with my BTinternet account. However, i chanced upon a PHer the other day who has a webpage on his profile, where you can register names etc.

Bit it seems to me that there is a cost involved.

I find it ahrd to believe that this page has the name i want, because its ratehr unusual. Rather, it has searched for the ones similar and then gave me options of what i can have instead of those existing already and will offer to give me them for a charge. SO my questions:

1) can i just register a name as my own and keep it, assuming it does not exist already. After all who is this company to sell me something that doesn't exist..?

2) Can i just buy the name as a one off fee, rather than having someone host my webpage for me..?

3) Is it better to have it hosted through one of these pages that offer to secure the web title, email and space all for a yearly fee...?

The website is only my own, with our cars and other stuff of interest to us really, its not commercial by any sense and so i don't need 1000's of MB of space. I like the idea of having a stand alone page rather than an extnsion name given by BTinternet, but is it really worth it..?

TIA!

You can buy a .co.uk for between £6-10. This covers a 2 year period after which you pay again.

The company you buy it off of can either supply web space too or you can divert the address you your own space (using hidden frames so when you type in www.blank.com it stays in the URL and the http://myspace.freeserve.wasteoftime.co.uk doesn't appear)

Try www.easily.co.uk lots of help on there too.

Try www.123reg.co.uk for the domain name there the cheapest i could find at the time and no Strings atttached. watch some domain companies they will only allow you to use the domain with there webspace and sometimes will not allow you to transfer the domain to another company with out an administration charge.

Also they have a reasonable deal on web hosting and email accounts 1.59 per month for 500meg of webspace and ftp and web access to upload and change your site..

Steve

If you have a ISP they usually throw in webspace with the account may only be 50meg or so but should do for a personal site. for example your webspace address will be something like buffalo.btinternet.com. if you buy buffalo.co.uk you can then point buffalo.co.uk to buffalo.btinternet.com. so when someone types in buffalo.btinternet.com it goes to buffalo.co.uk.

hope it helps

I used www.oneandone.co.uk to buy our domains and then spoke with our very own Dontlift who hosts them.

Cheap and easy - even for a web-numpty like me.
