Apologies to the repost police if it is, but just seen on another forum - if I was a cynical chap I'd see this as a good 'collecting' method....

Info:

You might have heard that a new service listing all mobile numbers (an online phonebook) is going to up and running in the next few weeks. It will be available on the text number 118800. You can actually remove yourself from this (i.e. become ‘ex-directory’) by clicking on the link below and giving your mobile number to them. They send you a free confirmation text and you enter a code number to confirm. It takes 30 seconds or so and saves you being listed:

http://www.118800.co.uk/removeme/remove-me.html

Please pass on to anyone who wants to be ‘ex-directory’ and wants to avoid marketing calls/texts etc.

For fk's sake.

I've got to take myself off a directory I never wanted to be on?

s.

Or is this really a clever way of garnering a list of real mobile numbers?

I think I'll wait until I get bothered by it...no point giving them my number if they don't already have it...

If you don’t give out numbers, how does 118800 put me in touch with the person I want to contact?
When you search on 118800.co.uk, we’ll send an SMS message to the person you’re seeking givng them your contact details so they can call you back.
Just don't call 'em...

I agree with the same, did a search with my name and town and it came up with another screen saying "We think we've found them.......please provide us with a bit more information so we can confirm we have the right person"

Seems like a very clever way of getting details for future contact.

Also noticed this "We do NOT give out mobile phone numbers. Instead, when you search on 118800.co.uk, we´ll send an SMS message to the person you´re seeking, giving them your contact details so they can call you back."

The media did this to death earlier on this week, and managed to whip up the hard of thinking into a frenzy. The rants from the public on R4 have been quite hilarious. They even had the guy from TPS on saying it was a load of fuss about nothing, I don't think it was what the beeb wanted to hear.

They have 15 million numbers from databases that already exist and are used for sales & marketing purposes, so chances are, more than half of them are out of date or inaccurate. All they are doing is making the database available to the public. As the bloke from TPS said, no one is going to use this service for cold calling, as you couldn't come up with a more expensive and less efficient way of doing it, especially when they already have access to the info for peanuts. It costs them a quid, and they don't even get to talk to you, you are asked to contact them, which of course, you won't.

The only people who are likely to use this service are probably going to be people that you already know and whom you will actually want to hear from, and quite likely in some sort of an emergency situation too.

As for opting out, I doubt you will be on it in the first place. And you are only opting out for this particular 118 service, you will still be on the database that they harvested in the first place, and that is where you are going to get any cold calls from, not 118.

Oh, and lets not forget, you are only on it because you allowed yourself to be on it, by not checking the box about not receiving any further information or offers from associated companies when you did something on line at some stage in the past anyway.

Can I be ex-directory with 118 800?

You can become ex-directory from this website. Or you can text the letter ‘E’ to 118800 from the mobile phone you want to be made ex-directory. Standard network charges apply. The first time 118 800 contacts you you will be sent an SMS reminding you about how to become ex-directory. Please allow up to 4 weeks for your ex-directory request to take effect.
Four weeks? WTF?!

Even an Amstrad 1512 could process an electronic request faster than that.

Four weeks and the cost of a text, for something that in all likelihood you don't actually need to do, because you aren't even on it.

This is not a mobile phone telephone directory, it's a very limited pre-existing database, that before this story broke, no-one was getting themselves in a tizzy over, trying to get removed from it. Going 'ex-directory' with 118, or being TPS will still not remove you from it either, as the database with your info on it is still out there, independently of 118, being used by all and sundry, not just 118.
