For the past 24 hours we have not been able to connect to any web pages, we have a strong signal strength but it will not load anything. All wires etc are in place, but still nothing. Im not exceptionally good with computers so wondered if anyone here knew if Tiscali were having trouble? Im posting from my mobile at the moment!

Mines working fine at the moment. But i do occasionally have times where my internet connection will say local only. Which i'm sure just means a problem at ticali's end. Try resetting the router or just try it again in the morning. Failing that you can spend a lot of time on the dog and bone.

Are you connected via wireless? Mine router will have a strop from time to time and refuse to connect. Just switch it off and on again to get it to reset the connection. You may have to do it twice, or maybe three times. I've never needed to do it more than that to get a link working.

Yup, that's exactly what mine does. The internal network and the internet are linked only linked via the router, so all your stuff can talk to each other, but it won't see the internet.

It sounds like the Internet connection on your router has gone, i.e. the link to the outside world, but the link from the router to PCs is still working.. It happens from time to time.

As you said you're not particularly skilled with computers there are a number of solutions..

1) Simply turn the router off wait 5 seconds and turn back on again.

2) Log in to your router, either using software installed on your PC, or using a web browser, entering something like 192.168.1.1 or it might be 192.168.1.254.. This should show you a login page or setup page.. Depending on the router you will need to look for a menu item like "tools" or "Technical" or possibly "reports" or "statistics".. You can use reports or statistics to see the connectivity of your router.. You should be able to get it to reboot somewhere on the menu system..

If you're unsure of the above, check online using google, google the router make and model.. and either stats or reboot. www.thinkbroadband.com is a good forum to check, it has most of the ISPs in their forum, so there are like minded people using the same ISP and hardware.

Once you've got it working again I'd check the firmware and try to make sure it's up-to-date. I'd also re-seat any ADSL filters you have ( a few times, to try and clean the connections a little) or if possible try to swap them out with spare/new ones.. They can quite often go wrong and only cost pennies each.

3) Leave Tiscali! Sorry to say this, but they are a bit "bucket shop" and don't have a great reputation. Check the stats on www.thinkbroadband.com and compare them to a few other ISPs such as Newnet, Zen, BeThere and idNet... I left Nildram when they got taken over by Tiscali as the quality of the service dropped noticeably. Of course you may well have a calls package with them, which benefits you.. So leaving is a little tough, but it will be worth it to save you all the hassle in the long run...

ETA : To try and explain what is happening see the page here, pic only, http://lucastomicki.net/ipv6.router.php The router sits in the middle of your PC and the outside world. Quite often the link from the router to the outside world just drops, but the "internal" links to your PC, Xbox or whatever still function.. As said, I'd look to see what the firmware is on the router and see if you can update it. I'd also definitely get some spare adsl filters, as they can suddenly stop working and are easy to replace. If one does seem to play up, throw away immediately (after replacing with a working one of course!!).

+1, cheap for a reason, spent every month phoning them all over the globe to fix yet another billing issue or technical. They are crap.

Switched to O2 £7 a month for 8MB broadband (being an O2 mobile customer). Same infrastructure as BeThere and they are awesome, no lag, constant speeds day and night.
