I thought I was screwed after having bought a Lexmark - you could only buy carts from PC World due to some exclusive agreement.
Turns out that due to the age of the printer (its old now at 18 months), the exclusive deal has been scrapped and you can get third party carts for a fair saving (£16 per cart rather than £25+).

Depends what you're printing. If it's just text buy a laser priner.
If it's text and images and quality is important you'll want inkjet, so choose one that doesn't use a thousand different cartridges.
Epson are the biggest offenders for this, my current Epson has two (that's TWO) seperate BLACK cartridges and guess what? If one goes, it won't print which sort of makes having two of the f
king things pointless. Worse still, when the colour goes, guess what? That's right, won't even print in B&W.

I was going through loads of cartridges but now I have a reservoir with 30 ml of each colour ink and they are easily refillable.
The cost of the CISS was less than a set of cartridges for my printer.
It does void the warranty on the printer though and can be a bit fiddly to set up.

My HP Deskjet not only refuses to print B&W when you run out of colour but also EXPIRES cartridges once they get older than a certain date - and won't print till you replace the cartridge, no matter how much is left in it!
Luckily my local computer shop sells cartridges for half the price of WH Smith et al.. shop around.

A set of cartridges, each with 4.5ml of ink, is about £60
A CISS kit is £55, and that comes with 100ml of ink for EACH colour! And a pack of 250ml refills are £36 .. definitely a worthwhile investment
