I'm a furniture designer that needs some feed back. Going to commit to some Business cards and trying to sort out a Web Site but the prices I'm being quoted are a joke, i'm not paying for your children's education.
Views on this please and any help on setting up a page for nothing would be very much appreciated.

How can we have a view when you haven't said how much you've been quoted and the website specification you gave the developer?Views on this please and any help on setting up a page for nothing would be very much appreciated.
And websites which cost nothing tend to look like websites which cost nothing (unless you can produce a capable site yourself). Why should a web developer's skills be worth any less than yours?
What would you think if someone posted this:
"Hi. I'm after some new furniture. Sideboard for the lounge, that kind of thing. I asked a furniture maker for a quote and it's a joke; I'm not paying fo his kids' education. Anyone know where I can get bespoke furniture for nothing?"
ETA: The message on the reverse of your card is lousy.

Download netobjects fusion essentials, it's free to download and use. Enjoy. http://www.netobjects.com/html/product_updates.htm... Although I think that it's effectively version 7 of their software (they're on version 11 now). I've used version 9 and now 10. It's
quite good and you can use a few pre-defined templates to speed up development.
Alternatively, if you are offering bespoke furniture, hand made, then you need to match that with a website that is also hand made.
There are people on here who could help, for a price, but not at nothing. Although I think some are more than reasonable for the amount they charge.
How many pages, shopping cart, interaction such as Flash?

king hell only asked if anyone had some advice and i get this.I've been quoted £3000 upwards for a page with some pictures and links, if you think this is good then I'm in the wrong game. How long maximum to come up with a simple page that clients can go and look at my work, I'm not expecting it to be Number 1 on Google. So say a maximum of 3 days on it at 6 hours a day, £167 an hour. So like I said, i'm not paying for his holiday.

Many thanks, taken on board about the de-pesonalise it, will remove the back stuff. I'm looking to spend a maximum of about £1500. Not after a master piece, it only has to have a few pages and links to pictures and sample pages of wood. No need for a shopping cart as everything is customer based in relation to price. Going to give 'netobjects' a look at. quite good and you can use a few pre-defined templates to speed up development.

Roger that. My misses dose not find it funny when I call her that so fair one.If you want something low cost but good looking then this is a graphic designer I deal with who builds CMS websites (ones that you can update content and add pages to) from about £500. The guy who runs it is Joe.

I'll disclose my price online, £500 per day (and have more work than I know what to do with).
edited to say, not an opportunist - just create high end, accessible, standards compliant sites for medium to large corporations.

I don't doubt 4hero is worth the money - the problem is there are many chancers out there charging similar rates for sub-standard work. £500 per day appears to be the perceived going rate for anything IT related. My problem is I don't really think of websites as IT - it's more marketing. Clearly there are some sites that actually do something but most of them are glorified catalogues. I'm fairly sure that's all the OP wants so maybe something like the one suggested would suit him and many others like him.
