Facebook newbie numpty has a question

OK,

Thought I would sign up to this new fangled "Facebook" yesterday to see what all the fuss was about, after resisting for several years..

Signing up was easy enough, but I was shocked that somehow Facebook immediately had a list of all my "contacts" on my normal e-mail account, how did they access this information when even I have to type in an umpteen digit/numerical password to get into it?.

The only information I had given them was my e-mail address.

All those friends have probably 'invited' you to join in the past so when you do sign up it already knows they're your friends, nothing sinister

there is an option to set up the contacts by giving them your email address and password, I usually skip that section, looks like ou gave the password out

When you sign up it asks you if you want to search you email contacts to look for friends, as the login name is a email address nothing sinister. you can do this manually in "people you may know" screen
