Mobile contracts
Discussion
I have not had a mobile for nearly a year, but am going to need one shortly.
I am guessing I am going to make ~150 texts a month and about 45 - 60 mins worth of calls. I am not worried about the handset or other features such as picture messaging or whatnot.
I've found a deal on 3 for £10 a month. This gives unlimited texts and 75 X-network minutes. This seems to fit my requirements plus it is pretty cheap. It also offers Skype so if my girlfriend gets a similar contract that would be an added bonus.
Can anyone recommend an alternative deal that would suit/be cheaper/better ?

cheaper than 10 quid a month? unlikely to find anything significantly cheaper.
3 is a fecking awful network though imo. I'd go for O2's cheapest 'simplicity' sim-only contract which is 9 quid something a month and is a one month rolling contract. Buy a cheapo phone to your liking, chuck in sim card, et voila. Plenty of phones out there for 20 or 30 quid.

Out of interest, what is wrong with 3? 3 is a fecking awful network though imo. I've checked the coverage map and it seems that in my immediate area we should have 3G coverage as does my place of work.

Don't sign up to any contract.

We've just signed up with a different provider even though our 3 contract is still running! Customer service is worst I have ever experienced. Took me 45 minutes to even get the PAC code out of them.
I'm staying with 3 next time my contract is up (3rd renewal). I find the customer service outstanding, they are always quick and smooth with delivering phones, new sim etc, flexible about bill payment when I couldn't afford it one month and just generally a great service! I've been with Orange, T-mobile and 02 and still find 3 the best. I usually have signal in places where my boyfriend/friends don't. So I suppose it's the luck of the draw whether you find 3 a pleasant or awful company to be with! I've heard alot of bad things about 3 basically not giving a f
k about customer service once they have you tied down into a contract, and even going out of their way to be awkward why you go elsewhere once out of contract.
02 are good, we have been with them for years with no problems. The only concern is that their coverage isn't as good as Orange/Vodafone and reception seems to struggle in certain parts of our house.
I currently use PAYG Asda Mobile that piggybacks off of the Vodafone network so reception is faultless. 4p a text and 8p a minute anytime to anyone for calls. This makes far more sense if you are a low user (£10 credit last me more than 2 months) than getting involved in an 18 month contract with more free stuff than you will ever need in any given month.

I've just left 3 and returned to O2. 3 had patchy coverage for me, but the worst thing (as also stated above) was getting the PAC code out of them. I'm a very placid person, but after 25 minutes of trying and firmly telling them I was not interested in any of their deals, I was starting to lose my rag with this girl (English was not her first language and she was very difficult to understand). I know she was only doing her job but 25 minutes? I would be reluctant to ever return based on this experience alone.
Presently considering moving from 3 to o2 myself. Been with three for yonks and have a rolling 12 month contract with whatever phone i want that they have basically but have noticed that i have been suffering reception problems of late. Not sure if its the network or my actual phone is packing up though which is the biggest issue.

I have just come off the phone (coincidentally enough) to Three.I was on for about 5 minutes in total and was immediately given a PAC number.
No hassle, no trying to "deal" me.
I have had no issues with Three over my last 3 years with them but I've just spotted an O2 deal I think I'll take up.
3 train their Indian customer service reps to lie and to simply not understand your complaint or problem that you have. Too frustrating to deal with.
I've checked the coverage map and it seems that in my immediate area we should have 3G coverage as does my place of work.I guess each network has customers who love and loathe their service. 3 I've used once and vowed to never again. Poor network coverage, dire customer service, and a bunch of calls added to my bill that weren't made (I was in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean at the time, as was the handset) which they refused to even investigate. Took a letter from a solicitor and trading standards to resolve it, even then getting the contract terminated was about as easy as brokering peace on the Gaza Strip!
