emails & isp's
Discussion
That's just one example though; others will, I'm sure, provide information only as required by the letter of the law.
Either way, you won't know if a request is made of your ISP unless/until the agency concerned comes round for a chat about it. If you're worried about what your ISP may be keeping, try asking them (possibly accompanied by a Data Protection Act request).
cheers from that link
WHAT IS BEING PROPOSED?
To keep details of every e-mail sent in the UK for a year
Internet Service Providers will have to record who sent the email, to whom and when
The e-mail's content will not be stored
Data can be accessed by more than 600 public bodies, such as the police and councils, if they make a valid request
Part of a European Commission directive
and no have not sent anything illegal or naughty...

Since I relay all my emails myself and am my own primary MX, my ISP doesn't see my emails ...
yep true - but unfortunately your mail passes over the ISPs equipment and it'll be on port 25 this makes it trivial for the ISP to take a copy on behalf of any acronym thats interested. Running your own mail server won't give you protection as I'd be stunned if they hadn't taken that into account. Future plans will rely on packet inspection tech to find out who you are making voip calls to etc (carnivore / echelon stuff)

There's always SMTP encryption, but the other end may not support it and it doesn't do a lot to prevent traffic analysis.

Pigeon: Yes, and they'll do it without a warrant too if the right person asks them in the right way...

My friend may also have received instructions to provide information to certain external agencies on occasions when said agencies forgot to present their search warrants.
Pigeon: Mobile phone conversations are not secure from tapping, the radio stage may be encrypted but the phone company can decrypt, indeed they must be able to in order to connect calls to an analogue phone line, so all it needs is to ask the phone company to do it.X: But that requires a warrant, and they only give out warrants in exceptional situations...
