Chaps,

A technical question. Probably a very simple one, but I'm not quite sure where to start.

I own a domain. Let's call it dingleberries.co.uk. I registered this at easily.co.uk and haven't moved it.

I use lots of eMail addresses in the form <address>@dingleberries.co.uk, with the settings at easily.co.uk set such that they all forward to a gMail account I have. (A few I use as spam catchers, which are directed elsewhere to non-existent places, but we can forget about those for now.)

Whenever I send an eMail from gMail, I can send it from "zcacogp@dingleberries.co.uk", but when it arrives it always appears to come from "<my gMail address>@gMail.com on behalf of zcacogp@dingleberries.co.uk".

GMail allows this to be changed, as long as I use the SMTP servers of the provider of the mail service that I want to use - i.e. the SMTP servers of dingleberries.co.uk. (I am guessing this is to allow people to use the gMail front end for their btinternet ISP-provided eMail account, or similar.) However, there is no SMTP server associated with dingleberries.co.uk, because it isn't hosted anywhere.

My home ISP is plus.net, but I don't think I can use their SMTP servers as dingleberries.co.uk isn't registered with them.

What can I do? (I'd like to get this resolved today or tomorrow, so quick answers would be appreciated, thanks.)

Thanks in advance for any help.

Oli.

ETA: There's a gMail page telling you how to put in those SMTP server settings here:

You can use Google as a mail server. This was only pointed out to me recently and I move a domain there for test purposes last week and I'm very impressed.

I'm also with Easily, and it simply requires some mods to the DNS via the control panel.

Details here:

http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/group/index.htm...

Then you can create whatever email addresses you like at your domain and they function entirely as you would hope with no mention of gmail anywhere.

PetrolTed,

Great, thanks. I'll have a gander at that this evening.

PetrolTed (or anyone else!)

OK, I'm trying this. I think I am heading in the right direction but am really muddling my way a bit. This is all new stuff to me ...

I moved one domain (I have two) into Google Apps, but marked it as a "Test" domain. (This was the secondary domain, the one that I could, at a smidge, afford to lose, so I wanted to do it first in case something went very wrong.) However, this one isn't "Verified" (not sure why), and is being listed as my "Primary" domain.

I then tried to load my other domain in (the important one, the one I don't want to lose.) This went a little better, and I changed both the CNAME and MX settings in Easily. They now look like this:

Does this look right? (The CNAME one is the second one down, the MX ones are all below it.) They have listed in a different order, but the Priority of each is correct - I presume this is OK.

What is the "Time to Live" (TTL)? This is set at eight hours - does this mean the settings will all disappear in eight hours time? How do I change this?

Also, how long does it take for the CNAME setting to be "Verified"? I changed the CNAME setting for the second domain (the one pictured) about 20 minutes ago now, and it is still verifying - have I done something wrong? I logged out of easily.co.uk as soon as I had done the settings; will this have affected anything?

Part of the problem is that I am not 100% sure what I am actually doing - I don't really know what Google Apps is, and I don't know what a CNAME, and MX or anything else is. I am just following instructions, and not understanding what is trying to be achieved.

Thanks again for your help.

Looks pretty much the same as mine, so jobs a good un.

First verification might take a while, but ought to be quite quick if dingleberries.blah has been at that DNS for a while.

Dont worry about TTL, its nothing you can change, or need to worry about it.

Looks pretty sensible to me. Check it all out in the morning when everything should have moved.

Ted, Marcus,

Thanks. It's all semi-working now. I didn't realise that the various settings took hours (not seconds) to propagate across the systems.

I mistakenly set up the two domains the wrong way around, so dingleberries.co.uk (which is the more important one) was a "Domain Alias" to the other one (the less important one), which was the "Primary Domain". So I have removed dingleberries as a domain alias, and set up a new Google Apps account just for dingleberries, and will (if it works) move the other one to be a "Domain Alias" of dingleberries.

I'm just awaiting the "Updating of the googlemail servers" for the new Apps account to allow me to send and recieve eMail from dingleberries. Says it takes an hour or so ...

Chaps,

A follow-up. All is well with the primary account in Google Apps. eMail seems to be being sent and recieved well, and without the "On Behalf Of" message which previously showed in Outlook when an eMail was recieved.

The secondary (less important) domain was set up as the primary domain in Google Apps, as I didn't want to be doing it for the first time with the one that really mattered. That Google Apps account was cancelled, and I am now trying to move it in as an 'Alias' behind the primary one, but it seems that you have to wait 7 days between moving a domain out of one account and into another.

So, all very good so far, thanks for your help. With a bit of luck, the next (and final) stage should be smooth as well.

Thanks again for your input Ted and Marcus.

Did you go for the paid-for version of Google Apps? If so, do you have to pay per domain name?

I have 2 domain names that I am thinking about bring over to Google Apps - but not sure if I need to pay per domain.
