Can't play dvd's anymore! help!

I installed the software for playing dvd's last night (long overdue as I've had the PC for 2 years), watched a few episodes of phoenix nights & then it froze. solid. so short of turning the damn thing off at source I Ctrl+Alt+Del and selected "end task" as it said the software wasn't performing. fine, I thought, I'll just re insert the disc & away...but no. I have no "D" drive...it's just vanished! if I insert the disc it thinks about it for a while then does nothing! where's the drive gone? how can I get it back? woe is me!

What if you go to device manager and click on cd drives, can you see it there?
Did you have any other players on there, what's the name of the players you have on there. It could be that your CD drive is corrupted and not working because of that.

the drive doesn't show up anywhere - it just wasn't there when I checked after I had Ctrl+Alt+Del to end the non responsive programme. XP help has not lived up to it's name, so I think I'm buglered as I don't know much about PC's or how they work
In device manager, do you have a yellow question mark?

the only thing that springs immediatly to mind is regions, I bet you haven't set the region properly for the drive and now the firmware is doogered. Well thats my theory anyway
Can you see it in the bios (hit del immediatly after startup) or look at the table of gizmo's as the PC is starting up.
What make is your PC, or if it's not a Dell/Compaq/HP... what make is the drive?

my PC is normally on 24/7 but I tried this just now and it's still not there. however I have spoken to a chap at work who will look at it for me later on today...I wish I weren't such a computergimp
