It just truck me whilst reading a topic on B3ta...
Why do we not get free ISP sign-up CDs through the door anymore? I remember as a school child, a week wouldn't go by that we didn't receive an AOL, BT, Freeserve or suckmyballsinterweb CD in the post. Infact, we had so many that as a CDT project at school, me and a mate made a giant internet setup CD clock. It was about 3ft tall made of around 100 glued together CDs with the top one being an actual clock. We thought it was cool...

t through the door from BT about their super fast broadband! I suspect it's down to people not having dial-up modems anymore... but still, I miss having mountains of random CDs clogging up my draws!

It's because at the time, browsers weren't installed on people's PCs, and you needed to have some basic configuration to get the dial up connections working. So the CDs would have a browser, and something to configure the dialup for the user.

As above.... plus machines during that era started shipping with modems built-in and thus clueless Joe (who'd bought his machine for 'word processing') could discover the delights of the internet the moment an AOL CD popped though the door... Nowadays he'd need to go and source some kind of broadband hardware, negating the ease of use of the free CD!

Obviously, with BB that just won't work like it did. I suppose there's no technical reason why it shouldn't but there's no way the ISPs will agree to a customer led online re provision system.Deluded said:

You're mental.All you had to do to change provider was to change the phone number you dialed.

Broadband doesn't work like that.
I still get milk delivered, it's eco friendly (comes by electric float) and you recycle the bottles and it's fresh and organic and you never run out because it's delivered most days. My full fat milk has cream on the top.

However, every spring we have to cover the red tops... the fledglings have to learn that the cream is under the silver tops.
