Is it much of a job to get the roller out of a Laserjet and clean it?

It's a Laserjet 4+

I've tried wiping it and rolling it in situ but it's still leaving dirty prints.

hmmm. might not be the roller. smudgy marks can be left by a dirty.... erm..... thingy wire... diffuser, is it?
IIRC, you can take the toner cartridge out and theres one of the green "you can touch this without screwing your printer" bits which when you slide it back and forth, cleans said wire.

If thats no help at all, take a piccy in through the lid with the toner cartridge removed and I'll see if I can spot it! Don't let the bright shiny green roller see bright sunlight for too long as its sensitive to light.....

Ted I have a couple of recon 4M+ printers on the shelf if you are stuck, one is spare for my own and the other is going spare (for other customers) we normally do replacement and then have customers own printer refurbed to go back on the shelf etc.

The toner cartridges on them sometimes start dumping excessive amounts of toner. This usually shows up as streaks along the paper.

Might be worth trying a new cartridge to at least discount this possibility - give it a good but gentle hoover with a small vacuum first.

Otherwise HP used to provide a cleaning sheet which was essentially a very fine sheet of sandpaper you form fed through it.

Thanks for the tips. There's a new cartridge in it. I'll try some of the suggestions.

Be careful with the hoover! You will find repairers use proper toner hoovers for this job toner going through a normal hoover can have interesting results!!
