just browsing the menus on the ps3 while waiting for a download and there i notice the bbc iplayer and i realised i havent paid my tv tax because i feel the content has become valueless... anyway are these sly wasteful silver spoon labour tv chaps working towards getting people that use consoles to pay the taxiation for reality tv, talents shows, advertising, product placement, tabliod news and crap.......

This is a strange one.

You don't have a TV license and they've forced it on you. They could quickly get your IP address should you choose to watch and it and use it as proof?

It worked through the browser for months. All they've done is put a link to it on the menu.

If you set iplayer as your homepage it's pretty much the same difference.

I thought the TV licence was mandatory if you had equipment capable of recieving a TV signal?

i do believe the license is only required if you watch 'real time' broadcast stuff...

as iplayer is no different to a video or dvd recording, you do NOT need a license is my understanding anyway.

Yep that the way it works.

You only need to pay the license if you are receiving or recording live broadcasts.

So McLovin you dont have a TV physically at your house/flat?
Choosing not to pay the license because you feel it is valueless would not stand up in court if you do have one.

My neighbour used the "TV isn't on is it?" approach and the TV license people left him alone!!

You cannot watch live streams on the PS3 so no need for a TV licence. You don't need one for archived content.

I thought it was more like "if you have equipment capable of receiving or recording live broadcasts". Which is slightly different?

Nope, you could own a million televisions and not pay the license, so long as you are not receiving or recording live broadcasts.

Its the action of recording/receiving that triggers a requirement to pay the license, not the ability to record/receive. wink

If the list of regs above (that seem to be from the BBC website) are correct, its not the act of receiving, but the knowledge that there may be intent to watch TV that triggers the need for a licence.

Either way if your house has a TV set and an ariel, you'll be hassled into getting a licence

Do I need a TV Licence?

You must be covered by a valid TV Licence ***if you watch or record television programmes as they're being shown on TV***. It makes no difference what equipment you use - whether it’s a laptop, PC, mobile phone, digital box, DVD recorder or a TV set - you still need a licence.

You do not need a TV Licence to view video clips on the internet, as long as what you are viewing is not being shown on TV at the same time as you are viewing it.

If you use a digital box with a hi-fi system, or another device that can only be used to produce sounds and can't display TV programmes, and you don't install or use any other TV receiving equipment, you don't need a TV Licence.

Just because you own a TV you don't need a license, and the act of owning one is not "intent to watch live TV". Its up to them to prove you are watching live TV, and I dunno about anyone else, but I've never heard of anyone being caught out by one of their mythical TV detector vans rolleyes
