Backup your work now

Just a quick reminder to backup your work. I thought I had lost an entire website a few minutes ago, and I only just managed to build it the first time.

I know this is a useless thread, but if it saves just one person form the near heart attack I just had it might be worth it.

I just deleted a production table on a live server .. but was able to recover it within 30 minutes due to having an incremental backup

Still far too few people who backup their stuff. I have a time machine, which backs up any differences. Great bit of kit.

Oh the stories I could mention about non backed up servers and people who couldnt be arsed to do their jobs correctly in Investment Banking....

A piece of work backed up.... Pfft...

Try looking into Disaster Recovery testing of a trading platform that handles billions of pounds a day going through it.... All because the Live version has been acting up recently...

To find out there isnt one and if the system fails its bye bye trading platform....

I almost st myself when I found that nugget of info out, knowing that the live version could go down at any time and not having the other one there is not a good thing to aid your stress levels....

Needless to say some heads almost rolled when I got my hands on them....

My old man is an author/journo (motoring in fact) and he recently rang me up in a flat panic saying his hard drive had just died and he'd lost his last five years of output, including a half-finished big book on rallying.

Thankfully a very clever PC repair man was able to rescue the HDD's contents and we are now resolved to get him some kind of backup device.

I lost over 70GB of music, films and photos that were irreplaceable when my old hard drive died on me.

now have a freenas box, running 400GB mirrored on my important data, and an external USB drive that it backs up to once a week, which is removed and kept off site.

Sometimes just clicking save is something people forget to do. Several times I've heard people in the office effing and jeffing because they've just lost a mornings work because their PC has crashed and they hadn't saved their CAD drawing for a good few hours, why they haven't setup auto save is beyond me.

I've got one of these too, it just sits there merrily whirring away now and again. I only pull stuff off of it once every six months or so but when I need it it's worth it's weight in gold.

Don't just back up. Make sure you can actually restore things now and again.

I've been using http://www.backblaze.com/ for the last couple of months and been very impressed. $5 a month for total peace of mind is well worth it IMO!

main trance is backed up to dvd and kept off site, most music is on old hard pc in loft,

personal files archived, but can see a splurge soon on dvd bsckups

I've got a 1.5TB external that stuff is backed up onto each night. Got everyting on there that's important - only thing not backed up is films, as I simply can't afford the space.

It's amazing how many people at Uni don't backup, have their hard-drive/installation corrupt, then hand you their laptop in a massive panic and in the vain hope that you can make their 5000 word essay reappear...

As has been advised on many other 'Help - my hard drive has died' threads, if your disk fails and a clever computer man can not use software to copy your data from it, you can always send it to Vogon aka Kroll Ontrack who can take your disk apart and copy data from it. They tell you what they can recover before hand, but if you choose to proceed it is not cheap at approx £1k. If something is truely irriplaceable though, may be worth it.
