Can't hear modem dialing
Discussion
I don't know if anyone has any suggetions but I can't hear the modem dialling up on my home pc. It connects online ok and I've checked the volume level which is up.
It was working as usual until Sunday (ie i could hear the modem) but then suddenly stopped.
Also, I have 1571 (answer feature) so if there is a message waiting to be picked up there is an intermitent beep on the line.
When going on line from my laptop it won't connect if there is a message waiting until the message is cleared and a constant dial tone returns. However my other pc (the one on which I can't hear a dial tone) connects no problem without the constant dial tone???
Sorry but I'm not to pc literate so any suggestions would be appreciated.
Many thanks,
Mark

Modem dialling sound can be switched off via a check-box somewhere in the Tools menu I think. But that doesn't explain why yours suddenly stopped...
It's strange, I checked in tools and the volume is set high for the modem but didn't notice a check box to switch it on or off so I'll have another look.
cheers!
On majority of modems it just has a slider to select the volume level, not a tick box.
One thing you could try is to insert an AT command which should over ride the windows settings. I think the command is ATL0M0. I cant remember which way round it is but I think 'L' is to set the speaker on or off and 'M' is the volume. With both set to '0' there will be no sound. If you know where the config file for the modem is then add the command to that, or go into the modem settings via control panel, select the 'connection' tab, click 'advanced' and type ATL1M1 in the 'Extra Settings' box. I think its a fairly standard command but if you have the instructions for your modem it should list all the commands.

As an aside to the main problem, if you want to get your laptop to dial up without having to first clear messages, you need to de-select the "Wait for dial tone" option on the modem's properties page.

Ahh, right, thanks, told you I wasn't exactly tech minded!
