My girlfriend is currently searching the Internet for a good, cheap laptop.

She has seen one on the PC World site at £600 (www.pcworld.com it's the one on the Front page. microstar intel celeron thing) and it looks ok, but she wants to see more.

She has visited dell, comet, pc world, currys, powerhouse, dixons, amazon and john lewis.

Anyone got anymore suggestions?

She's not too bothered about spec, doesn't want it too fancy, just needs something that will do the job and go on the internet. Looking for 20Gb + HD. CD Writer/reWriter, poss DVD but not too bothered. and a mouse connection

TIA

Stuart

As a general rule of thumb, I don't touch anything that says Celeron on it. Don't get me wrong, I like and use Intel, but Celeron processors have been problematic for me in the past. Especially with the newer intel mobile chips that are available...

Somebody at work got 2 second user laptops from a place in manchester that advertisd in MicroWarehouse magazine, it's always worth a look in there if you don't mind second user systems?

also heard good things about these people in the past but never used them myself.

Can I be bold enough to recommend the Samsung X05?

I got mine 2 months ago, and its now down to £998 I think. Has the Centrino package, 5 hour battery life, wireless ready, 30Gb drive, 256Mb (upgrade to 512Kb for £30),Windows XP Home (for this price from PC World or Windows Professional from Dabs Direct), really light weight, silver, DVD and CDRW. I did alot of shopping around, and this was good value for money - and I don't regret it at all. Its as fast as my Athlon XP2500 desk top too!!
