Virus problems i think....
Discussion
Ok, this computer of mine is really starting to get on my tits, to the point where it's gonna end up going through a closed window
Allow me to expalin.
Problem 1)
Windows XP:- On startup, 3 or 4 applications stop responding, and one (Kodak Easyshare) prevents Internet Explorer from loading. I also had problems with 'Detecting Proxy Settings' everytime I dialled up (ADSL) which also prevented MSN messenger logging in. Surfing was too badly affected, although somtimes I would get the 'Names Direct' website if I typed in a Domain website (ie pistonheads.com). More recently, I have been unable to Dial Up at all. The Dialup Dialog Box appears, which has a password 3 times the length of the one I saved in it, and when I try and sign on (with correct password) it tells me it was unable to establish connection and I should contact ISP or Network Admin. (currently using win 2000 FYI, but more on that later
).
Another series of Problems associated with File Allocation or some such is that it believes what in my mind should be a half empty 5GB partition is currently recorded at 4.8GB
Windows ME, a couple of Games, Some Open University Stuff and some MP3's. Ha, I think not
But wait, it gets worse
Problem 2
Windows 2000
This is really bad. Win 2K runs like a sweety, can't complain. Dialup First Time everytime no problemo, but 5 minutes later I get SVCHOST.exe closing down (and it has happened on this session already) yet on my Process Manager thing, SVCHOST.EXE is running
(I have posted this problem before which was resolved to some success but the bastard keeps coming back) This prevents Hyperlinks from working, yet I can open a new IE window and manually type in the URL, it also prevents Cut/Copy/Paste functions working, and probably stops other things working that I haven't noticed yet. But even before that Hyperlinks don't work properly, the new window appears and just sits, staring back a me, all white and virginal (
hmm, wrong forum
) and does absolutely nothing, no 'Opening page' no URL in the address bar, nothing. I also get a 'cannot perfrom operation - low memory' thing when I try and open WMP, I have 512MB fer chrissakes, if thats full I eat my fecking hat!!
Thats all the problems I can think of just now, so if anyone can shed any light any of these problems I would be most grateful.
Cheers
Stuart.
P.S. if you are still reading this, you need to get out more.

SVCHOST.EXE is a sympton one of the viruses that went round in the summer at the same time as the SoBig, Welchia and MSBlaster worms. (Had great fun at work with those)
You should be able to get patches from Microsoft or your AV supplier.
If you have the MSBlaster worm your computer will run badly, it will have problems using cut and paste functions and generally behave like a crock of s
t!
SoBig was the second virus which looked for the MSBlaster worm deleted it, then installed SoBig instead.
You will need to patch against MSBlaster first, then the SoBig worm, you should then be ok.
Not too sure but I think the SVCHOST.EXE is part of the Welchia worm.
If you have any problems getting hold of the patches email me off line and i'll see if I can dig out my patches and send them to you.
Hope some the above helps.

You might also might removal tools at www.symantec.com?
They also have a free online scan for your computer as well, worth running that first IMHO.
