Ok, found viruses. Now what?

My PC was playing up (redirecting me to different websites from the ones I wanted to go to) so I ran a scan-disk through AVG free.

Identified lots of 'Trojan' type infections and PUPs.

I have them all in the AVG vault but have no idea what to do now...should I just delete them or do I need to work out the purpose of the file pre-virus to check whether it is critical to the running of the PC?

iirc the vault thing is a sort of quarantine thing, so if the PC is running properly now there shouldn't be any issue if you empty it.

If you are concerned you could just not empty it and I don't think there should be any problems

I suggest you try running one or two other clean-up programs as well. Perhaps Spybot S&D, IObit 360 etc. No one program is going to find everything nasty, though you could be lucky.
Once you are infected you need to throw everything at it to get rid of as much as possible.

download malwarebytes free this is better than all the others and finds almost everything spyware etc
