I recently upgraded my cpu from a 1.3 duron to a 2400+ athlon and changed the clockspeed from 100 to 133. I also change the memory clockspeed to match. The memory has been runnig for a year at 100 to match the processor. Do you think this could cause memory problems as my pc has started freezing at random times.

Thanks,

Mark

Is the memory 133 or 100 ??????????????

Also have you checked if there is a BIOS update for your motherboard ????????????

wont be a problem then..

its like saying you have Z rated tyres on your car, but only drive at 80 everywhere.

Will you have any problems if you start to drive at 160, No, its still a Z rated tyre..

Ok dern,

We have got the first part coverd.

Next Questions

1, have you used the same CPU fan, of have you changed it.

2, If and I mean if you used the same fan, it may not be up to the job.

3, If all the above is utter rubbish, how long before the PC locks up.

4, It could also be down to the PSU not being up to the job.

???????????????????

Just to add, that if you enter the BIOS screen what temp is the CPU running at. ?

I bought a retail pack for the athlon so it came with an amd approved sink and fan. Motherboard monitor tells me it's currently sitting at 30 deg-c for the case and 46 deg-c for the cpu. I'll track this while I do stuff.

I changed the memory timing setting to less agressive settings and hope that that will sove the problem.

However, the m'board is an ECS K7S5A and according to the forum it has an issue running two sticks of pc133 memory at 133. So I'll see how the new memory timings go and if I still get no joy I'll consider getting some DDR (can I get one 512Mb stick or do I need to run 2x256Mb?).

Thanks,

Mark

Well the temp of the CPU if fine, see how it goes with the memory settings.

You can use 1 512 Mb stick of DDR memory, its only RIMMS that need to be in pair.

Doug,

Good luck.

My athlon motherboard will only accept DDR memory and wont run with pc133.

also had a similar probem awhile ago with my xp1800. have you done a fresh install of the OS or is it the same install as your duron as thiscan cause problems

steve

PS also check your power supply

Fresh install of OS (w2k) and power supply is up to the job. The power supply is a relatively new Solarmax KC-400 (Solarmax KC-400 which is 400W, +5V 28A, +3.3 19A, +12 V 15A, -12V 1A, +5VSB 1.5A, -5V 1A.).

CPU temp at point of crash was 50 deg-c while running SETI screen saver (crash not dependant on what is running but thought I'd exercise the cpu and memory while I was fixing the car).

What DDR do I need, what do all the specs mean for DDR?

Cheers,

Mark

Mark if you read through the motherboard manual it will state the memory you need it will be DDR 333/400 or maybe another number.

Check that in the bios that the emergency turn of temp is not set around 50c

Hmm, I've unplugged all the USB devices (scanner, steering wheel) and the slave hard drive and the cd player and it has been running for 2 hours. I'll give it a bit longer but that may point to the power supply not being up to the job.

Comments?

Thanks,

Mark

al signs point to the power supply, athlon chips are power hungry and if you have a few usb devices, decent graphics etc it could be to much for your psu to cope

I think so too, I''m leaving seti screen saver running and winamp visualisation running to keep the cpu busy to see if it freezes at 50deg-c again, with the other bits removed it doesn't get up to that temp so need to eliminate the temperature question.

Ok, that's the cpu at 100%... place your bets

Ok, that didn't work. Locked up again, temp was only 47 deg so don't think that's the issue.

Did some research on the board (ECS K75SA) and apparently it has a problem with running 2 sticks of P133 together (?). Ran with one for 12 hours without locking so that appears to be the issue. Did some more research before buying DDR and some people have had success with running at 138/138 rather than 133/133. Tried that and it's been running for ages at 75-100% cpu with no lock ups. Stange eh?
